Here's a new Kitchen Experiment from the wuff!
Vrghr wanted something simple, quick, easy, and comforting for supper this weekend. Hot dogs sounded good, but wuff wanted something more than a sausage in a bun. Then a silly idea hit. What about a hot dog pie!
Well, Vrghr didn't have his pie tins out, but had just finished up washing a loaf pan from an earlier item the day before. So, why not a hot dog loaf instead of pie?
So Vrghr sliced up a pack of hot dogs, made some instant biscuit mix, rummaged up some cheese to kick things up (cheese dogs are YUM!), and brought it all together.
Hey, this was good! Wuffy will definitely nom this again!
And it came together with about 15 minutes of cooks time. Everything else was just waiting for it to finish baking. That's great for when you're in a hurry.
And did we mention Cheap? You can still find a pack of discount wieners for about $1. The milk and biscuit mix needed is even less than that. So for just pennies, you can end up with 4-5 servings that'll quiet a rumbly tummy on a budget!
Wuff did learn a few things from it though, and will pass those along for his friends:
1) Make your own Biscuit Mix! It's simple to do, and the "Bisquick" brand wuffy used to save time was - - less than great. It has a distinct aluminum baking powder flavor that detracted from the results
2) Bake it longer than expected. The Box directions for the Bisquick mentioned 25-30 minutes for a coffee cake. Vrghr figured that would be similar. WRONG! The loaf still had some unbaked dough in the center. It needed at least another 10-15 minutes to finish. So wuffy added that time to directions below
3) Silicon baking pans are GREAT at releasing the loaf when done, but need more care when stacking up the hot dogs before adding the batter. The flexible sides make it easy to knock things around and tumble over your "soldierly ranks" of standing hot dogs
4) This recipe would work great with nearly any sort of pre-cooked sausage product! Kielbasa, stadium brats, Little Smokies, Vienna sausages, etc., would all go great in this. The "meat substitute" versions should work well too
5) You can take this all sorts of directions by adding spices and such to the biscuit mix and changing up the cheeses
6) Wuff suspects that kids will love this idea too!

INGREDIENTS:
8 hot dogs/wieners, sliced
2 C Biscuit Mix
~1 1/2C Milk
1 TBS Grated Parmesan Cheese
1/2 tsp Garlic Powder
1/2 tsp Onion Powder
1/4 tsp ground White pepper
1/2-3/4 C Grated Cheddar Jack cheese
~2 1/2 sliced American Cheese singles
Curry Ketchup & Mustard to serve with
1 half-loaf silicon baking loaf pan
DIRECTIONS:
Preheat oven to 400 degrees
Slice the hot dogs into equal segments, about 2/3 - 3/4" long
Stand the sliced hot dogs on end in the bottom of the loaf pan
In a medium bowl, mix together the biscuit mix, grated Parmesan cheese, garlic & onion powder, and white pepper. Add the milk and mix together until a medium pourable batter forms. You want this thin enough to work its way down between the hot dogs, but not too thin and watery, so to give the dogs some additional support. Add additional milk, 2 TBS at a time, as necessary to get the consistency you want.
Pour the batter in to the loaf pan over the standing hot dogs. Try not to knock them over. Pour until the tops are just barely covered. Tap the pan several time on the counter, to encourage the batter to get down between all the hot dogs. Sprinkle the grated Cheddar Jack cheese evenly over the top, and then layer on the American Cheese Slices over that.
Pour over more batter to create about a 1/2 inch layer on top
Place in the center of the 400 degree oven and bake for 35-45 minutes. Check with a knife or wooden skewer around the 30 minute point. Should come out clean when inserted into the middle of the loaf. If you find wet biscuit dough on the sample, return to oven and cook another 10 minutes, then try again. Baking time will vary depending on ovens and how deep your loaf ended up in the pan
Remove and allow to cool for about 10 minutes before turning out onto a plate. If using a silicon loaf pan, it ought to fall right out. If using a normal half loaf pan, you may need to run a butter knife around the edges to loosen things up.
Slice into portions and drizzle with desired condiments (Vrghr used Curry Ketchup and Mustard).
