*On his way to weld your chastity cage shut*
Sorry sorry, I just thought this was funny)
He is the latest comm by Vuk, finally, an idea I had since high school came to life - Cove with a robotic hand in a cyber-steam-punk setting.
***Mature content in the story below, be warned***
And yeah about backstory - Cove was a benign boy, bright and witty, hollow bones not that much heftier than the books he carried around in his bag, and even when we were kids I kinda liked his soft nature.
He had to come down from the clouds in his twenties, now a man of hard work, bright engineer, and an outlaw, hiding in the underground city, concealed between machinery and piping of once thriving autonomous space dome - Diarki - one of few remaining colony cities, on its course to the new planet, a new world, the last hope.
But nothing is so sunny as it seems under the fake skies - something treacherous is lurking in the shadows, grimy hands taking bribes, undercover rebels living next door, you think see it, you are sure you know it, you remain silent - life should go on. On this one-way trip there is no good in being paranoid, no use in big news, just look up on a sunny day, smile and play a little game of make-belief, everyone is doing it, just play along.
Downtown the city of neon Cove owns a repair shop, earns his living by fixing paying customers or... reverse fixing less fortunate folks. He knows that the things he does are wrong, but everyone is doing it and well "I need to get parts somehow *shrugs* it's their fault they crossed paths with someone they shouldn't've"
Don't get me wrong this owl is a good person, he used to go to work, used to live a simple life of filling and sending out paperwork, a task done more as a custom rather than necessity, one of those activities that prevent folks from going "co-coo" as once a lion guy from the next cubicle who Cove used to work with said. He hated this entitled maned joker.
In a small town, there is nowhere to hide, everyone knows everyone, people you go to school with, you graduate with, go to work with, go to the bar with, see them on tv, they are your boss and your best friend, your girlfriend, there is nowhere to hide from friendly familiar faces... but underground.
A little thought experiment time - what would you assume if you saw a guy with a knife standing over the bleeding body of his co-worker? Did he do it? Did he just snap? Or did he like it and would do it again and should be taken down for the sake of everyone aboard?...
None of the above? That's nonsense you saw what he did, evidence literally dripping from his feathers. And our protagonist knows there would be no court, there would be no one bold enough to try and ruffle feathers of this calm life. And so he flees, hiding in the shadows, making his way to the only place he knows to be "safe" - mythical undercity. The only eyewitness of murder climbs down a ladder he discovered with friends in middle school, the only one who tried to help the victim leaves a trail of blood on the wall, the innocent collapses on the cold floor, shaking, sobbing over how his life is over and the police is on his tail
But hours pass, then a whole day, but no one comes, no one dares to follow him several levels below paved concrete and green grass. And here our young bird learns how to live in this new world - starves, steals food, steals more, gets caught, gets away, steals again, gets his arm cut off by a gang member, wakes up with severe fever in an old space dock house.
It's unclear how, but they become good friends with the owner. Bird is allowed to live here as long as he helps around the house and doesn't get into trouble. A few months later Cove wakes up and trips on something by his bedside. What he looks at is a simple, make-shift replacement for the arm, and that day bird is determined, he will make his life count, every struggle made him stronger, not physically so (nature really is a bitch this way)but instead shaping him into becoming a respected man of the undercity who has everything you need... But -he- sets the price *dramatic music and fadeouts to black*
The story has been on the back burner in my head for a couple of years now so hope you like it UvU
