Chapter 2 of Cost Of Time
I hope y'all have fun reading this, and if there's anything you want to say, feel free to leave a comment!
The inside of the volcano was predictably hot, but not to a point where it was too uncomfortable, or got in the way of anything. The magma flowing around on the inside wasn't as hot as it would've normally been, as if cooled down by the magical aura of the mystery dungeon to a point where you can go near it without it being too dangerous. That is, as long as you don't actually touch it.
The five pokemon went through the cave with varying levels of enthusiasm. They had a couple of encounters with wild pokemon, but usually outnumbered them and could beat them without much trouble. All seemed to go well enough, but then they came to what appeared to be a dead end. A big stream of magma stood between them and the way to the next floor.
"How do we get over that?" The kabutops asked.
Cole got closer to the magma, almost touching it. "Well, depending on how cooled down the magma is, I might be able to swim through it, but I don't think I want to risk that."
"That wouldn't help any of us either." Tierra remarked.
"No, there's another way." The blastoise said, before suddenly shooting a hydro pump into the magma, leading to some of it turning to stone. The kabutops also sprayed water, although that wasn't nearly as effective. Still, with combined efforts they were able to create a way over the stream.
Cole was the first to walk over, being the lightest one, it was probably the least risky. Next was Tyke, and then the kabutops. Tierra insisted that the blastoise should go before her, and so he did, however, he could feel the bridge giving up below him, and soon enough it started cracking and breaking into pieces. The blastoise jumped, although not very far, it was still enough to get him to the other side. He turned around, and hydro pumped the magma again, to create a new way for Tierra.
"Uhh, we're getting some company." Tyke said, and before the blastoise could even react, he had a flamethrower shot at his back.
The blastoise was sturdy enough not to tumble, and when he turned around, he saw the magmortar attacking, accompanied by two magmar.
"I fear you'll have to wait a bit longer." The blastoise told Tierra.
"Take your time." She only responded, and watched her teammates jump into battle.
Cole was the first to fight back, charging at the magmortar with a quick attack. He hit, but was then met with a fire punch in return. Tyke took this as an opportunity to attack the big distracted pokemon with a sludge bomb. The poisonous sludge hit the magmortar in the back of its head, turning its attention to him. But right as it charged up a new flamethrower, it got hit by muddy water shooting out of the blastoise's cannons, which was actually directed at one of the magmar. This of course turns the magmortar's attention yet again, now turning to the blastoise.
Meanwhile, the other magmar was being held busy by the kabutops, which shot at it with a barrage of rock blasts from a distance. Tierra also occasionally helped with long ranged dragon breaths, although that of course only worked if no one was between her and the enemies.
The Magmortar ran at the blastoise with a thunder punch. The blastoise tried to dodge, but got hit in the shoulder and tumbled backwards. He could stop himself before falling into the magma, but by then the fire type already raised it's fist for another thunder punch. This time it went for the head, which was sure to knock the blastoise into the magma, if he hadn't avoided it by retracting his head into his shell. He then tried to push the magmortar away, with his head still in his shell, but it was too heavy for that to work. That's when Tierra shot a dragon breath right where the blastoise's head just was, to hit the magmortar right in the face, letting it lose its stability and get shoved backwards.
Tyke and Cole meanwhile teamed up with the kabutops to get rid of at least one magmar already. Cole hit it with flame wheels, mostly just for distraction, while Tyke attacked with shock waves to deal some damage. Though the biggest source of damage was by far still the kabutops' rock blasts. But their strategy could of course only work out for so long, as the other magmar was free to attack anytime. It shot a flame burst at Tyke, who was luckily far enough away from the others for them not to get hit by the resulting explosion. Still, Tyke himself was hit pretty badly, though he was still very much up to keep fighting.
"I'll take care of that one." Tyke said, glaring at the pokemon that just attacked him.
While the battles continued, an emboar sneaked up on Tierra, before hitting her on the head with a hammer arm. She instinctively threw her arms back, hitting the emboar in the stomach with one of her sharp fins. Then, without even looking back, she goes for a bulldoze attack by stomping on the ground. The resulting shockwave pushes the emboar back enough for Tierra to turn around, and create dozens of small rocks, which she then shot at the fire type. That stone edge attack resulted in a critical hit, but the emboar kept fighting. It ran forward and used arm thrusts against the gabite. Tierra got pushed back, dangerously close to the stream of magma. After the emboar's attack was over, it didn't give Tierra any time to react, as it grabbed her by her shoulders, and tried to push her into the magma just like that. Tierra of course fought back, trying to push the emboar away from herself.
The blastoise did his best to stay away from the magmortar, while attacking with ranged attacks. Namely, he primarily used muddy water, that way when the magmortar came close, its thunder punches would be sure to miss. At least that's what he hoped, but when the thunder punch came, it hit the blastoise right in the head. That was enough to make the water type fall backwards, as well as paralyzing him.
Tyke kept his promise, and took care of the magmar that attacked him. He mostly just distracted it, focusing on dodging attacks rather than attacking himself, but he also landed a couple of hits every now and then.
When the kabutops finally finished off the other magmar, which he and Cole were fighting together, Cole went to help Tyke, to get rid of that magmar too, while the kabutops attacked the magmortar.
The magmortar was about to attack the blastoise again, who was laying on the ground, twitching a bit because of the paralysis. But before it could execute the attack, the kabutops jumped at it, slashing at the back of its head with a liquidation attack. The blastoise tried to use a hydro pump while the magmortar was distracted, but as if he was hit by a string of bad luck, his attack was stopped by the paralysis. But on the good side, the magmortar was now distracted by the kabutops, and could barely land any hits, while the rock type kept slashing at it.
Tyke had better luck, poisoning the magmar with a sludge bomb at one point, and when Cole suddenly burst out of the ground, it didn't take much longer until that magmar too evaporated into smoke.
Tierra was pretty even up with the emboar. The fighting type may be physically stronger overall, but it was also weakened quite a bit. Still, she was in a bad position, as even a single wrong move could mean her end, while the emboar could move freely, and do anything to make it as hard as possible for Tierra to keep standing. Tierra didn't want to use any attacks, fearing that by shifting her focus, fearing she may get pushed into the magma easier. But she didn't know what else she could do, so she decided to blast a dragon breath into the emboar's face. With the emboar hurt again, Tierra grabbed it by its arm and threw it in the magma by herself. Then she proceeded to jump onto it, using it to get to the other side, before it evaporated. Upon landing, she ran at the magmortar and struck it with a dragon claw. When it then turned around, she followed it up with a stone edge, resulting in the magmortar finally evaporating as well.
The team agreed to take a break after that fight. They all had some oran berries, as well as a cheri berry for the blastoise. Tyke tried to start a conversation with the blastoise, but his questions were usually met with short answers instead of a full conversation, if any at all.
...
"Do you really not have any kind of nickname? I feel like that could get confusing."
"No, they're not that common where I'm from, and there aren't really enough other blastoises to make it confusing."
"I guess that makes sense."
…
"So, if you aren't from around here, then what brought you into this region."
"Well, I try to keep changing the place where I live, because I don't want to stay at the same place for too long. And every once in a while I end up around here."
…
"Can I ask you one more thing?"
"It's not like I can stop you anyways."
"Why do you not want to join another rescue team? I mean, you told me that you prefer to work alone, but you never said why."
"... I think we should get going again, whoever we're saving is probably waiting for us."
And just like that, it was decided that their break ended, and they all continued to make their way through the dungeon. There weren't many bigger inconveniences, and they eventually reached a point where they got out of the cave they were in this whole time. They were now climbing on the outside of the volcano, and while there, they could get a better look of the flying thing they saw before entering the cave. It was a moltres, circling a point of the volcano, and spewing fire onto that point.
"A moltres." Tierra said. "That must be what defeated Wave."
"Then we need to hurry up." Tyke recommended. "If they're still fighting, that means he's still alive. We don't know how much longer he'll hold up."
The blastoise however disagreed. "I don't think so. Moltres isn't one to randomly attack people. Either he attacked it first, or it's trying to lead us to him, not fighting him."
Tierra raised an eyebrow. "It's a wild pokemon, why would it be different from all the other aggressive pokemon found in mystery dungeons? And why are you talking about it like it's some kind of friend of yours?"
"It's not just a wild pokemon. Trust me, I've had enough Interactions with it to know it pretty well."
"How? I thought you weren't from around here?" Tyke asked.
"I'm not, but I've still been here a lot over the time. But that doesn't matter right now, somebody needs help, and we should get to them as fast as possible."
Everyone agreed to stop wasting time, and they hurried up to help their friend in need.
They got in trouble here and there, but nothing that's really worth mentioning. In the end, they all managed to get pretty close to the tip of the mountain. Or at least as high up as they thought they needed to go, as here was were the moltres kept shooting its flames, and as they got closer to that spot, which was a gap between two big walls, the moltres landed in front of them in a protective stance, and stared down at the rescue team.
Most of the team got ready to fight, but the blastoise instead stepped forward and spoke up: "We're here to help a friend of theirs." He gestured at the rest of the team, "We don't mean to do any harm to you or your domain."
The moltres kept staring, now at the blastoise specifically. It stared right into his eyes, and he stared right back. But after a while, the moltres flew back up, just to reveal that the one they were looking for wasn't there after all. Instead, what they found was a single rescue team badge lying on the ground.
Tyke slowly stepped forward. He kneeled down in front of the badge and picked it up. "W-what?" His voice was shaky, and very unlike his usual upbeat and happy tone. "What does this mean? Where is he? Where is Wave?" He looked up at the moltres which was still hovering above them, it almost seemed like he was about to tear up, but he could hold it back just fine for now.
The moltres roared, although it was almost more like a scream, and looked up at one of the walls they were between. It was hard to see if there was anything up there, but the team still used this as a sign that he must have been up there, and the moltres was nice enough to lead the way. It first showed them to keep going through the passage they were at, but then it suddenly stopped, and let out another one of its roars, looking at one of the walls.
"What's that supposed to mean?" Cole asked, but the blastoise was quick to answer.
"There is a small hole in one of the walls, we need to get up there." The water type said, and rushed toward that part of the wall.
"What? Why that?" Cole again asked, and this time Tyke was the one to give an answer. Sort of.
"I don't know. But since he knew about moltres wanting to help up, I assume he has some experience with this dungeon. We should probably do what he said."
The blastoise tried to climb up first, but Tyke just climbed around him and reached the small cave first. Then the blastoise was second. Cole tried next, but when he was almost there, the wall suddenly started shaking. Tyke tried reaching out a hand, but couldn't reach far enough. While Cole should be able to survive that fall, it would still leave him heavily injured, if it wasn't for the moltres catching him halfway through the fall, and safely carrying the quilava to the cave. Tierra insisted on the kabutops going before her, but the rock type wasn't convinced that going up there actually had any use, so he refused to do so, and Tierra climbed up without him.
"What are you waiting for? Get up here already!" The blastoise yelled towards the kabutops.
"Why would I?" He asked back.
"I mean, he has a point, why are we up here anyways?"Cole asked.
"Because the-" The blastoise wanted to explain, but the earth started shaking again, and a stream of lava ran through the alley they were in, rapidly approaching the kabutops. "That's why."
The kabutops' eyes widened, and he immediately started climbing up the wall, or at least he tried to. He got up, bit after bit, but with every time he raised his claw, there was the danger that he might fall off again. The lava was already underneath him at this point, so if he fell that would mean his end. He got closer to the cave, and both Tierra and Tyke tried reaching out for him, but when he tried to reach out himself, he slid off. He was able to catch himself, but was starting to lose hope that he could make it up there, or even just stay on the wall until the lava went away.
"Come on, just a bit more, we almost got you!" Tyke tried to encourage him, but he already gave up.
"Don't worry about me. Good luck with your mission." The kabutops said, as he took his own rescue badge, and used it to evaporate into light, that way escaping the dungeon.
"Did that guy just fucking leave?" Cole said.
"He was a volunteer from the beginning, we can't make him go any further than he would be willing to go." Tierra explained.
"Well, at least you're still with us, right big boy?" Tyke looked at the blastoise.
The water type rolled his eyes at that nickname, though he didn't actually mind it, and even smirked a little. "I'm not gonna leave until we're done here." He then replied.
The team just waited for the lava to go away, with no one actually saying anything. This let the blastoise notice that Tyke still wasn't fully back to his upbeat self. The toxtricity still looked worried. The person they're looking for must've been pretty close to him. The blastoise considered saying something, in an attempt to cheer him up, but decided to stay quiet.
The lava seemed to drain away completely, and the team could climb down again and continued on their way, with the moltres still leading them. There weren't many other problems, especially with the moltres on their side. And soon, they made their way up to where Wave supposedly was. And in fact, there was a floatzel lying on the ground, seeming almost lifeless. Tyke immediately ran over to the body and checked that he was still alive. And as it appeared, he was, although he was also unconscious.
"Oh, thank arceus." Tyke said. "We got you bud, we'll get you back home."
Tierra took their rescue team badge and let all five of them disappear into light. They all reappeared in front of the dungeon entrance, where Tierra took it on herself to carry the unconscious floatzel back to their base, and Cole was quick to follow. Tyke at first followed too, but when he saw the blastoise going his own way, he stopped and turned around.
"Do you maybe want to come with us? We could, like, have some drinks or something. Celebrate the successful mission." Tyke said, but when he realized there was no reaction from the blastoise, he added: "Perhaps not, but I thought I might as well offer. Just to thank you for helping and all…"
The blastoise stopped, and then, after some thinking, turned to the toxtricity. "I guess I might as well…"
"Wait really? Cool, that's great! I can show you around the base a bit, maybe you'll like it. I'm sure we can have a great party there, trust me. Maybe we can even……"
The toxtricity kept talking all the way through the walk back, giving the blastoise no time to think about how this is exactly what he feared. If this celebration would go as one might expect, he would be likely to get attached to the team, which would mean he would have more people to lose later on in life.
