Hello again, true believers! Have another commission here, this time of Ryu Okage once again. It's very entertaining to work on pieces with this character.
For those who don't remember (or don't know) Ryu is a dragon/werewolf hybrid. I did a previous commission with him decked out in some fancy armor, however this time the commissioner thought it would be nice to show the dragon looking a little more relaxed. His owner gave me a link to a "pirate/poet" shirt and asked for a pretty boy pose that said, "You want it."
What I sent him said, "You know you want it, but I'm to nonchalant to notice," more then anything, but I was in luck! The commissioner really liked the pose, so I went with it leaving the messy lines to add more emotion to the romantic theme of the piece; coloring almost all the lines the same color to make the black scales stand out.
The background I pulled together from stock photos. The original was just of the balcony looking over the sea in daylight. So I converted the day scene to night from scratch, adding my own stars and light reflection on the water. I place an image of a blue and red nebula on the night sky, adding a few clouds for dramatic effect. On the pillar I placed some Christmas lights as well as some street lights trickling down on the bright moon beams. All of the images were altered using layer effects, textures, and filters found in Photoshop.
I wanted to create this feeling of dreaming with the coloring and background; like it could be real, maybe... Listening to a lot of Loreena McKennitt, Secret Garden, and Cirque Du Soleil music really helped getting into the flow of that dream state. Also, I usually go for a circle, but I just couldn't crop the final background product, it was too much fun manipulating the photos.

wonder darken loose surround you.
Step into my sigh,
look inside the light,
you will know that I have found you."
