This picture is of Ryu Okage, who is part dragon, part lycan... which is hard to tell because of the amount of armor and clothing he's wearing, but it's all right. He's facing off with a ghost warrior in a dark temple like location.
I had some trouble with this commission, I'm not very good at drawing armor or weapons, however I looked at a lot of reference pictures to get a good feel of it all and went for it. The first try I came up with was too Orient(North Asia)/Pacific Islander for the commissioner's tastes so I went for a much more basic breast plate, shoulder pads, and belt combo. I also added something like a cod piece for decoration/protection.
The sword, once drawn, wasn't that hard to color in the end and I had fun with it. The scripture on the sword is Hyrulian - in fact the one of the things that inspired the picture was The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass. The Hyrulian translates: "Bless this blade with eternal flame. Ignite the souls of the righteous, engulf the phantoms of the treacherous, and burn a path to the lustrous future! Aurora Phoenix!"
I made that corny bit of fluff up myself, I feel special, but I suppose it doesn't matter what it translates to in the end, as long as it looks good; and it does. The ghost warrior was a bit of fun to toy with. Once I made 'his' magic sword I wanted to give the effect that you'd only be able to make out his shape in the light. So after adding in the basic form of his body I took a dark, tawny color and added lines along the far-side of his form to create a shadow effect for his armor or body that was now visible in the dusty light. Couple that with a few highlight lines and I was able to pull of the look I wanted.
Overall, I'm very proud of this final product. It was an entertaining challenge during my sick spell.
