This model's been going back and forward with progress lately. Being a fully furred model, it's extremely fickled when it comes to lighting and level of detail. What looks great at a distance looks horrid up close, and what tooks fine up close looks stupid at a distance.
And unlike the Varhg model, this model is made from sections which means I cannot opt to have no fur.

Can't you create several different layers of fur, each with their own lighting via light-linking? That way you can try and make each layer of fur look different than its previous, upper layer. Darker, shorter, etc.
I've not tried playing around with fur or hair yet, but can't you apply a fractal noise or something to randomise the length/positioning/colour/etc of the fur. At least it'd be less uniform and perhaps less blobby.
Or I guess you could cull the fur until you're a certain distance away from the character.
