Rangi is a female hyena who is born to clan matriarch Shenzi very early on in the reign of King Scar. Now allowed to roam free in the Pridelands, Rangi and her family had plenty of food to eat...at first. As the years went on, the hyena's overhunting of the land's game results in a food shortage, and a sudden drought forces whatever game there is to seek food and water elsewhere. It's during this time that her brother Jakobi having a cub named Janja, and her cousin Eda has two sons named Cheezi and Chungu. Rangi adored her baby nephew and cousin's cubs right from the start and was determined to help her family keep them alive and fed.
When the cubs are still very young, a lion named Simba shows up to challenge Scar, after which a huge battle between the lions and hyenas break out and Pride Rock is set ablaze by a bolt of lightning. Amid the ensuing chaos, Rangi and a few of her fellow clan members work together to carry the clan's young cubs to safety. Several hyenas are lost in the battle, having either been killed by lions or burned alive in the fire. Rangi waits for her family members once she and the cubs are far enough away from Pride Rock, hoping that at least her parents were safe. After a downpour had put out the flames her cousin Eda, her aunt Cheka and a handful of hyenas arrive to inform Mwezi that her parents and her uncle Ed were gone, having been burned alive along with Scar. Seeing no reason for them to stay, Cheka gathers what's left of the hyena clan and leads them elsewhere.
The hyena clan, now a small fraction of what it once was, end up settling in a part of the Outlands. Rangi was understandably broken up over the loss of her parents, but she was determined to keep going for her family's sake. The clan lives peacefully in the Outlands for a few months until one fateful day when some of Scar's followers show up, lead by his former queen Zira. Having recently been banished from the Pridelands for their loyalty towards Scar, Zira and her pride decided to track down his former lackeys and "punish" them for not protecting their king from the usurper.
And their attack was without mercy.
Rangi tries her best to help defend her clan, but she ends up being badly wounded by two lionesses that ganged up on her, and she has no choice but to flee if she wanted to survive. She finds a safe place to hide and stays there until Zira and the other lions have left, only to find her clan slaughtered. Rangi had hoped that at least Janja and the other cubs had survived, but despite a thorough search, they were nowhere to be found. Rangi was now the sole survivor of what was once a large and prosperous hyena clan.
Once her wounds had healed, Rangi wandered around aimlessly for days, not sure what to do now. Her wanderings end up leading her to find Azizi and Kamari, two young males that had recently left their birth clan to find a new one to join. Obviously having no clan to call her own anymore, Rangi chooses to join them on their search. Rangi struggles with survivor's guilt for a while and pours her heart out to the two hyenas, but Azizi does his best to comfort her, telling her that all that mattered now was the future that lied ahead of them.
The trio eventually find a very small clan of hyenas to join which just consisted of a mated pair and their adult daughter. Rangi and Azizi end up becoming mates and later had a daughter of their own named Asante. And while she now had a new clan and a new family, Rangi was still mistrusting of lions and was determined to keep her daughter away from them.
One thing she wasn't counting on was Asante meeting and later falling in love with one.
Rangi's design was adopted from Witch-Doctais46 on DA a few years back. (Original image) I finally found a role for her in my TLK-verse as Janja's aunt and Asante's mother!
And as for how Janja and the other cubs survived Zira's attack? I'll explain that sometime soon. ;) (Wink)
