Ghalyela is a lioness who was born back when prides still followed the old ways of lion society. Not long after she is weaned, a band of rogues take over her pride and drive out her father. Knowing that the rogues will try to kill her, Ghalyela's mother takes her and flees. Two of the rogues chase after them, and after getting far enough away from them Ghalyela's mother hides her in the tall grass and leads the rogues away from that spot, determined to keep her daughter safe.
Hours go by, and Ghalyela's mother never returns to retrieve her. Alone, scared and hungry, Ghalyela begins to cry for her mother. Luckily for her, her cries end up attracting the attention of Hekima, a female mandrill that lived in the nearby Grass Walls who was out collecting herbs. Not one to leave a child alone, Hekima scoops the little cub up and carries her back to her home. Some of her fellow mandrills are shocked and frightened by the fact that she brought a lion -a predatory animal- into their home, but Hekima manages to convince them to let her stay.
Ghalyela grows up within the Grass Walls, living off a steady diet of rats, shrews, birds and other small vertebrates that mandrills fed on. As she grew bigger, Ghalyela began to require much more that small prey animals for sustenance, which made the other mandrills fear that she might consider one of them to be a potential meal. Also fearing that her adopted daughter might someday turn on them, Hekima takes Ghalyela out beyond the Grass Walls for some hunting lessons. Being a mandrill, Hekima didn't know much about taking down animals such as antelopes and zebras, but she does give Ghalyela a few pointers such as looking for slow or weaker animals. Ghalyela struggles at first but she eventually learns how to hunt for herself, which eases the mandrill's worries.
While out looking for food one day, Ghalyela ends up coming across a young male lion around the same age as her being attacked by a leopard. After being saved from the angry feline the lion introduces himself as Bomani, a male that had been driven out of his birth pride by a fierce usurper. After hearing that he had no place to call home, Ghalyela invites him to her home in the Grass Walls and manages to convince the mandrills to let him stay, at least for a little while. During his stay at the Grass Walls, Ghalyela teaches Bomani the ways of her adopted family, about how the deceased lived on as stars in the night sky, looking down on their living family members. Having recently lost his own father, Bomani takes comfort in Ghalyela's words, believing that in a way he was still with him.
During his stay with Ghalyela, Bomani learns about some trouble going on in his birth pride from a local hornbill named Kujua. Wanting to aid his family, Bomani spends the next few months training to take on the usurper that drove him out, often sparring with Ghalyela to become stronger. Ghalyela doesn't hold back, wanting to make sure that Bomani was strong enough if the usurper was as fierce as Bomani claimed he was. Once they both felt he was ready, Bomani journeys back to his home along with Ghalyela, Hekima and Kujua in tow. Many of the lions in the Ndona were surprised by his arrival, as male lions usually never return to their natal prides after they're old enough to leave. But still Bomani challenges Alamgir to a mashindano, which the fearsome lion accepts. The battle is long and fierce, but in the end Bomani manages to overpower Alamgir and win the fight, after which all the other lions chase him out of the pride.
After healing from his injuries that he sustained in the battle, Bomani declares that from this day forward, the barbaric ways of lion society shall be done away with, that male lions will no longer have to challenge other males and kill their cubs. Bomani declares that he shall now be the pride's king, and since there were no other unrelated females in the pride, Bomani asks Ghalyena if she'd be willing to become his mate. Having grown close to Bomani over the past couple months, Ghalyela happily accepts and becomes the pride's queen by Bomani's side. Kujua the hornbill becomes Bomani's majordomo, a steward tasked with advising and reporting to the King. Ghalyela's adopted mother Hekima is granted the title of Royal Mjuzi, an individual responsible for healings and caring for the pride's inhabitants and serving as the royal family's adviser. After his first litter of cubs are born, Bomani's brother Askari ends up returning home from a life-changing journey of his own, having mastered an amazing power along the way. He ends up forming a team of lions tasked with with protecting the Ndona Pride, now renamed the Pridelands, from potential invaders, and the two brothers work together to turn this new kingdom into a paradise. Bomani and Ghalyena teach their six children the values of their society, and when they're fully grown four of them disperse to found new prides or introduce other prides to this new way of lion society, while their oldest cubs Kwanzaa and Pili stay and eventually succeed their father and uncle as the pride's new monarch and guard leader.
Ghalyela lives to a ripe old age, dying peacefully one day with memories of a life well lived.
