I’ll Fight by Your Side
No sooner had I agreed to be trained with the Keyblade by this strange man did he extend his hand to me. I hesitated for a mere moment before accepting. His intimidatingly cobalt blue eyes giving me a sense of security. The man pulled me close before holding out his other hand. As soon as he clenched his fist there was a flash of light and a weapon appeared. It was a Keyblade, at least I think it was. It was vastly different from my own. This weapon looked simple in comparison, little more than a metal stick on a simple framed handle. The teeth looked like Allen keys stuck through the shaft of the blade. I didn’t have long to look before the Allen keys flew off the blade and encircled us. A sharp glowing light rose from the ground, forcing me to close my eyes.
When I opened them once again, we were in another world, one vastly different from my own. This one looked like a huge grand hall like building attached to the top of a mountain. The structure was complex with windows of different shapes and sizes dotted around almost randomly, except two large rectangle ones that stood on either side of what was obviously the main entrance. The whole building seemed firmly anchored where it sat, with large golden chains covering the higher areas and attaching them to adjacent pillars of rock.
A short way from where we appeared, I could see another figure swinging around a weapon. The man who brought me here noticed my gaze.
“That there is Nathaniel, my other pupil. But you’ll meet him in a moment.”
He then moved to stand in front of me. Taking off the long black cloak I discovered the intimidating cobalt blue eyes were deceptive as this man was rather young. His smooth furless dark brown skin was only broken up by patches of smooth green fur that sat atop his head and around his rather flat looking muzzle. The outfit he wore under the cloak was rather form fitting: a tight deep red shirt hugged his curves, offset by a short coat that only ventured to above his waist. He lacked a tail or wings of any kind and instead had just a light brown set of trousers that covered his legs.
Clearing his throat, the man continued.
“My name is Ine. Master Ine to you. And welcome, young pupil, to the Intrepid Junction, the world at which you now find yourself. In ages of myth during the first Keyblade war, worlds like this were strategic nexuses. For example, this one, as it teeters on the top of this mountain, so too does it teeter on the fringes of the realms of light and darkness. Making it an important outpost for either side of the war to launch attacks…”
Before Master Ine could continue he heard a snickering noise behind him. Turning around, he came face to face with his other pupil who had noticed the two and had snuck up on them during the speech.
“He practices that speech in the mirror you know.”
“Have you finished the form stretches I gave you this morning?” came the rather cutting response.
Turning to me the new figure held out his hand in greeting. He was around the same age as me but also had fur, unlike Ine. His fur was white with black stripes. He also lacked wings but made up for it with a much fluffier tail. The only thing more striking than his pale green eyes were the sharp looking spikes that protruded from his back and tail. He was dressed rather casually with a simple sleeveless black jacket and blue jeans.
“Nathaniel.”
Still taking in my surroundings, all I could manage was a rather subdued “Huh?”
This made the figure laugh and grasp my hand with his own giving it a firm shake.
“My name, its Nathaniel. My friends call me Nat.”
Feeling somewhat embarrassed, I muster up a proper response.
“Oh, my name is Kaidron.”
No sooner did I finish talking did Master Ine clap his hands.
“Welp, now that we’re all friends, how about I show you around? Your training can start tomorrow.”
The routines became second nature after a while, summoning Winds of the Heart from dawn until dusk, going over forms and attacks and learning skills under Master Ine. Me and Nathaniel had become good friends almost instantly, making jokes about how young Ine was until he’d get mad and teach us a lesson by besting our course records or beating us in sparring matches. He was a very different master than Rito but I appreciated the help in my goal of returning the Valley of Gales back to its former glory.
On the rare days we weren’t training I’d ask Ine questions about the creatures that destroyed my home world, the Heartless, and about the purpose of the Keyblade. His young visage betrayed the depth of his knowledge which made me think he may have been older than he seemed. A notion Nathaniel agreed with. He had apparently only been on the Intrepid Junction a month or two before I arrived. His world was also attacked by the Heartless, and he was pushed through a portal by a friend he grew up with to the same world I woke up in when my world was destroyed. It felt good having someone who understood my pain.
A few months passed and both me and Nathaniel were summoned to the main hall of the Intrepid Junction where Master Ine stood with his Keyblade in hand.
“Welcome you two, I trust you slept well last night.”
Neither me nor Nat answered, sensing the very serious mood in the air.
“Today you two will face a trial. This will form part of a Mark of Mastery trial. While passing won’t grant you the rank of master, it will be a crucial step in earning that right.”
Master Ine held up his Keyblade in front of us.
“My Keyblade, the Mark of Authority, is a special Keyblade. It is one of the original Keyblades made to mirror the heart of this world. To protect it from danger I am to use this Keyblade to change the very makeup of this place. Those who wish ill upon the worlds will become lost in a vastly changed space called the Dauntless Carousel. A labyrinth where these world’s portals are all turned inwards, making escape almost impossible to all without this Keyblade.
As stewards of this world, you must be able to traverse the Dauntless Carousel and make it to the centre before an invader does. That is what we will be testing today. I’ll activate the world shift and you two will have to work together to make it back here.”
Both me and Nathaniel, with stern looks on our faces, summon our Keyblades as Master Ine turns his around and plunges it into the ground. No sooner did his Keyblade make contact with the floor that the walls shudder and shift. Loud rumbling and scraping noises sounded out as the walls shifted and moved with surprising speed. Without time to react the very floor we stood on falls out from under us. Both me and Nathaniel fall.
Thinking fast and not knowing the depth of this cavern, I take flight, catching Nathaniel mid fall allowing us to glide safely to the ground below.
“Thanks Kai,” Nathaniel stutters out looking at our surroundings. It was like someone bore a hole straight in solid stone. No ridges, no seams in the rock, just a solid cavern.
“I guess we go this way?”
Nathaniel points towards the darkness further down the cavern.
We walk forward for a few minutes without any alteration in the rock formed cavern before we’re startled by a noise. One noise became two, then more. A banging and slamming noise like some beast hiding further down.
“We should check out what’s making that noise…”
Nathaniel nods and responds,
“I don’t think we have much choice. There isn’t anywhere else to go after all.”
I laugh slightly realising the pointlessness of what I said before turning around and continuing down the corridor.
Further down the cavern opened into a large hall complete with stalagmite pillars. The hall was dimly light by small globes which appeared to contain fireflies. But by far the most interesting thing was the source of the noise. Two people in hooded cloaks were fighting. The cloaks themselves were identical but what we could make out was each figure sported wings and tails much like the people from my own world. Survivors maybe? But why were they fighting?
I called out to them.
“Hey!”
One of the figures standing on the ground by the corner of the room was distracted by me and turned in my direction. They narrowly avoid a deep purple tentacle summoned by the other figure above them, slamming into the rock wall at their side. The flying figure then took notice of the two of us. Malice dripped from the figure’s gaze and both me and Nathaniel took up our keys ready to defend ourselves. Our instincts were right as a moment later from under the sleeves of the flying figure shot two purple tentacles launching towards us. Before the attack could make contact the second figure intercepted holding up their arms which were both ensnared by the tendrils. As they struggled in its grasp, I lowered my Keyblade.
“D-did you come from the Valley?”
As I stammered out my question, the figure turned to me, face completely obscured by their hood. They slammed down their hands forcing the tentacles away before stretching a hand between where me and Nathaniel were standing. We looked behind us a swirling black hole appeared in the air. As we turned back, we were forced through it by a blast of air. Landing with a thud on the other side, I have enough time to look up, seeing the figure still looking at me with his arm outstretched before he clenched his fist and the hole closed. Without enough time to get back to our feet and react we were left alone in this new area.
The air of the new place we were in was oppressive and dark. As if a deep purple fog clung to every breath. The area looked like a beach, the pleasant noise of the waves lapping at the shore was the only thing breaking up the uncomfortable silence. Deep black pillars gutted out the horizon at random intervals. It didn’t look like anything lived here.
“I think we’re in the Realm of Darkness” Nathaniel said, summoning his Keyblade ready.
“How do we get home?” I reply mirroring his motion summoning my own Keyblade.
“I think our more immediate problem is simply surviving.”
As if summoned by his statement other noises filled the air. Loud scurrying noises as familiar black shapes pulled themselves from the darkness, growing more and more in number each passing moment.
“We can handle this can’t we?” I whisper slightly, Keyblade gripped hard in my hand.
Nathaniel places his hand on my shoulder.
“We’ll get through this together, side by side.”
I place my hand on his and we share a brief moment that restores my courage. The moment is broken by the advancing Heartless who leap at us, claws ready. Batting the first volley away with his Quillwrench Keyblade it’s wrench like shaped offset by the quills at the tip and lightning motif coiled around the shaft. Nathaniel jumps back. Holding the Keyblade forward the quills on his back begin the glow.
“Quillshot!”
Nathaniel’s call rings out as he strikes the air with his Keyblade as a volley of quills appear from nowhere, flying in a streak of white light and striking down a sizeable number of Heartless who vanish in a puff of smoke.
Not wanting to be outdone I follow suit and call out my own attack.
“Storm Force!”
Slamming the ground with my Keyblade sends a wall of air force launching many Heartless into the air, turning into smoke as they hit each other mid-air or landing on the ground.
The shadows recede and we breath a sigh of relief which is short-lived. Creaking noises are heard as four large figures pull themselves from the darkness. These impossibly tall dark humanoid figures shone glowing yellow eyes towards us, their faces obscured by vine looking tendrils, huge heart shaped holes dominating their torsos. Me and Nathaniel stand close together panting. The oppressive nature of the realm was making fighting more and more difficult.
“Ca-can we do this?” I pant out unsure of our chances.
“We just need to work together!”
I give Nathaniel a weak smile.
“Thanks Nat”
He smiles and we nod at each other. Nathaniel leaps behind me as we both hold our Keyblades up.
“Quillstorm!”
Nathaniel’s quills glow again, many quills shooting out in streaks of light but before they can make contact with anything they begin to circle. I stand firm, a tornado forming in front of me, catching the quills in its pull. As the tornado moves forward the smaller Heartless are trapped within it, getting ripped apart by the quills spinning around it like bands of solid light. The first larger Heartless is wiped out almost instantly by the attack. Two of the others put up a fight but are ultimately laid low by the onslaught. However, the attack wanes and vanishes before the last of the creatures can be taken out.
“I’m sorry…”
Exhausted, I collapse, my Keyblade vanishing as it lands on the floor. I remain conscious long enough to see Allen keys form and a ring of light envelop us before my exhaustion takes over.
I wake up later in my room. Nathaniel is asleep, leaned over the bed on a chair. He must have been here waiting for me to wake up, I think to myself as Master Ine enters the room.
“I’m so glad you’re finally awake!”
He moves over to another free chair, nudging Nathaniel awake who shudders and bends his stiff back.
“Morning Kai, knew you’d pull through!”
I smile, he was obviously worried about me. Ine clears his throat.
“I’m sorry I didn’t find you two sooner. I felt your presence leave the Dauntless Carousel and I scrambled to figure out where you’d gone. Although I can’t say the trial was a success, I must commend the two of you. Not many Keyblade users so new could survive that long in the Realm of Darkness. But tell me, how did you end up in such a place?”
And so we told him. About the two figures fighting in the caverns and how one seemingly saved us by forcing us through the portal.
But who were they?
