Both can be good, as well as just doing quick pieces for feeling and gesture, or more abstract experiments. Sometimes those can be the best. -You don't have to post the crappy ones...
Right now I'm working on learning digital art. Part of that can be seen in edits to much of the stuff in my scraps.

This can be good advice. That type of practice will give you control over your lines. Practice and repetition can give you basics that become muscle memory that make it possible to not have to think about the basics as much when drawing. I also find small repetitive tasks are often a good meditation. I do that a lot with music, too. It can be interesting to build something bigger from many small repetitive or echoed pieces.
However, I often hate rote practice. I'm often inclined to apply the same type of practice in creating pieces, which may more be called experiments. Many of these I might discard or choose not to share, but occasionally I like them or find them successful.
This particular piece was part of a small series I did where the idea was to work with simplification of form and an aesthetic of using the fewest possible lines to define it. As you can see, this was just two unbroken lines. I did a few takes on each piece until I was satisfied with the flow of the lines and the balance of the space. There's at least one other of these pieces that I may post sometime.
