The story behind this character is by far the biggest. Too much to put in here infact.
In short he's the remnant of a god. Much of his powers stem from that time, though his memories of said time were erased, save for a few moments of tragic heartbreak.
He is the originator of the race named Magic-shifter, although he doesn't remember doing it.
