Hey guys! How are you doing? Hope youre doing fine. I hate to say that Ive been worried about something for quite a while and Id like to ask everyone here for an opinion.
Its about my payment processor. As you know, most of everyone here use PayPal to pay the artist for commissions, ychs, adobts, etc. but as an artist and living in Thailand, Ive been having some problems lately...
One day I got some bad news from PayPal Thailand. To keep it short and simple, it seems like PayPal is changing their policy and they want us (Thai freelancers) to register our business as a "company". That means we (me included) have to do a lot of paperwork and get taxed in an even higher rate!!!!! I have no idea why they did that but its not going to be good for me who use PayPal as the only platform to receive the money X(

Im in the chat group of Thai furry community. Weve been having some discussion about what we should do next and right now, I think the best bet for me is to move to another payment platform such as Payoneer, Skrill, or any other platform that doesnt do what PayPal is trying to do right now. I dont know what the next move is for other Thai artists but I assume that theyre either registering their Paypal account as a company and get taxed heavily, or looking for (other platforms / another platform) like I do right now. And this is what I wanna ask you guys...
In case I stop using PayPal and move to something like Payoneer instead, will everyone here be okay with sending payments to me via those platforms instead? Im not sure if they support cross-platform transaction or not, but in case they dont, I think you will have to make a new account, deposit money, and send it to me through Payoneer instead. Im afraid that because of the extra work on the customer part, some of you guys might stop supporting me.

So yeah... Id like to ask for your opinion on it. If most of you guys are okay with it, then Ill start using Payoneer real soon, but if not Ill try to look for other solutions.
Thank you very very much for your time reading through this. Feel free to tell me what you think. Every single opinion is very appreciated

Venmo and CashApp may also be good options? I'm not sure, I don't know enough about them.
thank you so much for your opinion <3
It seems to support international payments with a Payoneer account, and even bank transfer or credit card payments (for the EU, US and possibly elsewhere) so your clients don't necessarily need to make a Payoneer account to pay you as long as you make a payment request, which makes doing business and supporting you easier. :)
My only concern is that the Thai government will start regulating other payment providers in addition to PayPal to make sure they get the added revenue from freelancers and small businesses. Essentially give them the same restrictions. That makes this only a temporary solution and you might be forced to register as a company eventually.
Of course, if Payoneer lives up to their promises, then it probably might be better to take that delay, no matter what. The concern would be the drop in potential clients. People are slow to trust new payment providers since they do give them very sensitive payment details, after all.
Personally? I would use Payoneer, and use PayPal alongside it for as long as you can. Make people aware of the change in payment provider coming up and how little that will change things for them.
You could also try to reach out and make people adopt Payoneer accounts during this time, by making either exclusive offers for people willing to go to Payoneer, or a small discount if they do. Essentially, give people a carrot for registering and making the move smoother.
But, that's just brainstorming, heh.
I'm sure that the people currently supporting you will continue to do so, as long as they are able :)
Im not sure if everyone can use Payoneer or not since I heard that someone cant use that cuz its not available in their country but if everyone can use that, thatll be really great X3 I have to do some more research about it then.
thank you very very much for your help hun
Payoneer would loose quite a few users as it’s not available in most everywhere yet.
That said if the reason why Paypal is changing their TOS in Thailand is due to change in legislation, you might want to investigate the specifics with the help of a lawyer together with other Thai artists.
but yeah! Ill see what I can do! thanks hun
I wonder how Ko-Fi would work. I'm not entirely sure of its inner workings, but it could be a vialble workaround maybe? Plus, Paypal users can pay throug it as well.
id be wary about giving a new platform access to my bank account unless i knew more about it too
Continue to work as a group and you will all get to your best solution.
I had an artist use this on me. I don’t know if that helps.
If PayPal is giving you more difficulties at this immediate moment than you care for, then I'm all for you deciding to move to something else. At the same time, you do bring up a valid point about the customer having to take "extra steps" in creating an account and other information for something they may not use otherwise. Some may be perfectly fine with it, others may be a bit more hesitant. There's also the possibility that with increased freelancing work being accepted worldwide, other companies may eventually also follow the same lead as PayPal based on your country's laws.
I guess the question from here is what you'd think would be the best option to move to and how effective it'd be long term, considering the setup process from both ends, availability in most areas, and overall making others "aware" of the option you choose (namely because of how commonplace PayPal is). Keep in mind that there's a good chance that this will continue to be a "work in progress" for quite a while, and there may be some shifts in terms of who's willing to buy, in what ways, and when. But, it's the "cost" of doing business in general and I'm sure you'll come to a satisfactory conclusion eventually.
but thank you so much for your help. Ill see what I can do. thanks again
I'd love to chat with you over telegram again and find out what you have chosen after all
