More from Notos
Worked up the first half of designs for an idea that has been kicking around in my head for the past 3 years. I don't know what format it will ultimately end up being, or if I'll ever find the time to start working on it seriously, but it feels good to get some of the initial designs done.
Aside from 3 of these characters I have no idea which ones will come to the forefront of the story as main characters and which will fade to the background or become cannon fodder, so I'm interested to see what the general first impression is of this first batch based on looks alone...
So, anyone who is interested can answer this set of questions in your own opinion, you can answer each question with as many or few characters as you like. Top row from left to right are characters A,B,C,D and E. Bottom row left to right are F,G,H,I and J. The basic idea is the characters involved in a tournament sort of setting;

Sorry to reverse analyze your experiment, but the answers to your questions rely on our preferred archetypes and socio-cultural biases.
Least interesting scenario:
In an anime, (for a Japanese person)
A and I would be strongest, because for some reason smaller, faster characters win though elegance, and all kinds of mystic energy shite.
Reality:
If for some reason monsters were real and I saw these guys in UFC, obviously the big red (B) dude would destroy them all, no contest. This is why tournaments have weight classes. Unfortunately for small guys, they always lose against bigger guys with similar fighting skill. Big and slow is a myth.
Also, (F) for size, claws and teeth.

Smarts:
Intelligence and physical appearance have no correlation. (I say that as a brain who is often interpreted as an oaf because of my build)
History/friends with? B. To see if he's gay, and looking for a workout partner. And if he is, that takes care of the locker room question.
Aim to Defeat? The most evil one there has gotta be the chick. She is obviously some sort of human clone of A. Also, what is she hiding behind her leg? A gun? In that case she wins the contest outright.

Heh interesting, thanks. reverse analyze all you like, I really just designed all of these with no 'ranking' in mind other than 3 of them, its interesting hearing people's take on them, and will help me figure out what type of character and how well they will fare in the story.

D is easily my favourite design here, but he gives the impression of filling the 'bumbling comedic fatty' trope. I'm sure he'd hide under the desk while shit was busy getting real.
You've got an incredible knack for character design though! This whole cast has a really engaging aesthetic.

You've got an incredible knack for character design though! This whole cast has a really engaging aesthetic.
1. Just by physical appearance in order - H, F, B, J (H first because different alien anatomy might prove completely different muscle strength and density. Size difference does not necessarily equal more strength.)
First impression of possible (hidden) powerhouses - A, E, C

5. C His face and eyes and stuff just look intelligent.
6. H and J have rather "dead" eyes and expressions. It'd be interesting if they ended up being really smart, but the eyes convey otherwise. The reason the multi-eyed guy isn't on this list is that with so many eyes, the stare seems less blank.
7. E and F... not gonna explain that one.
8. C, E, F, and I. Yes, I put the "guy to beat" on this list, because I tend to be interested in my opponent.
9. D Just doesn't look like he'd fight. At least, not directly. He kinda strikes me as a techie.
10. B or F. Both look tough and capable, but F looks like he's just a bit more ruthless and cunning -- not to say he looks like a bad guy.
