Meine gefesselten und geknebelten Lieblingswölfe 11: Ber...
Today it was raining and so I could make a good progress with one of the other pencil picture orders. As a self reward I drew another wolf for my dungeon collection. This time it is Bergamo from the Trio de Danger from Dragon Ball Super © Akira Toryama.
I simply like Bergamo. One reason is again the german voice actor. Matti Klemm also voice acted Crowley the demon in the Supernatural tv series, Kumatetsu in The Boy and the Beast, All Might in My Hero Academia and Senghok "The Buddha" in One Piece, and he is the programm announcer for the german TV channel Kabel 1 XDD

I think I would've loved Bergamo's design a ton more if they didn't stick his digitgrade feetpaws into boots...its literally the most distracting thing about his design and it bothers me because it looks super wrong and like no one in the animation industry of Japan knows how to make anthropomorphic characters of wolves and the like.
You could make Bergamo a better design, Eternal! Because you don't stick any digitgrade-legged characters in footwear beyond protective armor that isn't boot-related! Its just making me wonder if most of any larger japanese animation studios know how to create furry characters and then use those designs properly and make sure nothing looks awkward.
The only anthro characters I know that are done right are some Pokemon and Digimon, and Gabiru from That Time I was Reincarnated as a Slime. The only thing I don't like about Gabiru is that he has a spur/heel spike. Other than that I see everything was done right!

Unfortunately, its not even just legs and feet, its how believable and how graceful it looks in motion, and how well it meshes with martial arts...
I do want to note that I am not arguing, but I am going to present my point to why I am bothered by Bergamo so deeply.
Also I understand you sticking to the original design, it was your choice and I have absolutely no problem with that! I only have a problem with Bergamo in terms of design choices that absolutely don't mesh well together exclusively from Akira Toriyama's design standpoint since its not your design choices.
A roundhouse from a digitgrade legged creature feels like an abomination to what martial arts is. Its supposed to be graceful and deadly. The whole point is that its a beautiful dance of death, from inspiration from the various animals in Chinese Martial Arts related to Kung Fu, to something like Bajiquan or the entirety of Wushu, along with Taekwondo (Korean), and Aikijiujutsu (Japanese). And the reason why is because us humans have Plantigrade Legs. The very feet themselves don't matter as much, but the shape of the legs do.
For example: Bergamo's dirty-fighting yellow brother did a VERY high hitting front kick that was an attempt to hit Gohan's face, it. Looked. The. Opposite. Of. Graceful. That kick still lives on, bothering me to no end to this very day because it looks so offputting, that kick simply doesn't belong.
Dragonball Z & Super are ALL about the Martial Arts fights (because both me and you had an eye-opening discussion that Super is trying to integrate an adventurous spirit that Dragonball has, while keeping the fights of Z). That's where the giant problem comes into place. Bergamo and his brothers still use Kicks. I'd have significantly less of a problem if they were Infighters, also known as Boxers. No kicks, only punches.
Gracefulness aside, let me explain from a better standpoint.
You, Eternal, if you were to throw out a Roundhouse Kick to my face or head, your kick wouldn't reach me fast enough and would give me enough time to at least fall over or sway out of the way. Why? Because your digitgrade legs are not perfectly straight or are like plantigrade legs. Your kicks literally are a detriment to how your known groups of martial arts you prefer (if we throw out all magic). A sweeping front low kick to my legs to trip me up is also a giant risk to me being unable to react to your attacks. Your leg just simply doesn't connect quite like a human-shaped leg's would. The force doesn't properly travel because your leg is simply not shaped right.
Digitgrade legs have advantages over plantigrade ones:
- Better Jumping
- Better, faster running
- Better kick-offs for starting a sprint
Plantigrade legs have advantages over Digitgrade ones:
- Our legs allow us to climb better
- Our martial arts based on our bodies are fully optimized
That's just to name a few for each. We do obviously have a big disadvantage over Digitgrade Legs, because our shins can much more easily break and it ALWAYS will suck when that happens. Digitgrade legs have an added benefit, the tops of your rat feet, your multiple digits that make up your toes, go up throughout that area and can actually take the spread of the force, allowing it to not break upon one hit. That area of your leg can take much more force before one or all of those bones are fractured or broken.
Bergamo's boots just feel like salt in the wound when their martial arts that involve any kicks, look like an abomination to what martial arts is. If they weren't fighters, I would still be bothered by the boots, absolutely! But I'd actually be able to appreciate how well-sewn together the rest of him is. Allowing me to care more about him entirely, than what I actually feel now. But since he's in a martial arts animation, kicking no less, I can't appreciate literally anything because the substance, the grace, and even the science of physical attacks of martial arts...is thrown out.
The only viable attacks you and Bergamo could have in your arsenal that wouldn't look ridiculous and abominable is Thrust Kicks. The ones that push opponents away most of the time. Any thrust kick - or....almost any thrust kick as I want to leave room to be wrong - would look just fine if you and Bergamo did them and only them. Because its actually logical from every standpoint I am making. Is it graceful? Not really. Is it scientifically viable? Absolutely! In fact, you and Bergamo, if your plantigrade-legged opponent was wrestling you to the ground, you two would have the absolute most benefit of pushing your opponent off with your feetpaws and being able to breathe even just for a moment, which is all you usually need! I, the plantigrade-legged Typh, would still have issues presented because I simply have a different shape of legs that is more suited to martial arts, I'd be on the ground slightly longer than you and that can in fact be a deciding factor of losing and winning.
I certainly hope I don't sound mad, because I am not, but if I sound bothered, well...it...is obvious with how much I talked. But that is all of my points to why I dislike Bergamo so vehemently. And if all of it was not the case, I'd like him more because...well, I already stated it in the above area!
Despite me seemingly going nuts in one comment, I hope I am not seen as an insane person.
"Passionate" I can take as a passive-aggressive insult or an actual compliment but...I am not insane for thinking these things because it all should be logical across the board.
This all aside, you did good in making Bergamo look good in your style! I apologize for the super long-winded explanation! Unfortunately...I...got nothing else to say because the current compliment and any subsequent compliments are already stated both above and below my comments. Of which my comments are likely, usually devoid of any flavor because I talk so...plainly.

I'm so glad you were able to draw, and to make such a wonderful drawing! Such a handsome wolfy, all big and buff and shirtless... and tied up and gagged like he needs to be. Poor thing doesn't look very cheery though... well, I'll just tie another bandana over his lips, that should cheer him up! ;D
It's good to see Bergamo as the latest character wolf to appear in the series, with your own twists on the character design. With Basil and Lavender having digitrade legs it makes sense Bergamo would as well so this design of boot works better for him. Also a nice twist with the energy based cuffs, I imagine serving to dampen the power level of one of the strongest fighters of Universe 9.
Given the harsh nature of his universe, I imagine it's a relatively comfortable situation for Bergamo compared to some he's been in and at least he's been spared the humiliation of being bound or gagged with his own scarf.
He really doesn't look happy about his captivity and quite defiant so maybe he's going to be facing what for him would be very unnerving treatment, having been taken captive by someone whom found him rather adorable and fluffy and was rather displeased that Bergamo refused to allow them to pet him.

Thanks much. As much as it looked unrealistic for feral shaped legs to be in boots, Bergamo´s design worked awfully well without the feeling of something being displaced, because I am a somewhat fanatic follower of design plausibility in character design stuff^^
I guess there must have been a reason why universe 9 was ranked below Goku´s universe^^

You've also made some rather lovely anthro designs for the non-anthro wolves in this series as well like Akela, which along with the anticipation of which wolf might be the next has made this a fun series, as well as the fun of imagining different scenarios for how they might have ended up in the dungeon.
I do hope we might perhaps get to see Universe 9 again in a future Dragon Ball series or perhaps see the Trio de Danger again.

That he'd been shown mercy was unexpected, something that was not generally the rule in his own harsh universe. His Ki dampened by the strange energies of the cuffs that bound him, he was otherwise not mistreated though after his snarls and attempts to bite his captor had gagged him though at least without the dignity of using his own scarf.
He remained defiant, staring suspiciously at his captor and determined that he'd show no sign of weakness or fear and endure the pain of whatever torture was about to be inflicted upon him. He had no idea what they were referring to though his best guess was it would involve some of manipulation of nerve clusters and pressure points.
Bergamo would discover he was quite mistaken about the nature of a belly rub and after a few moments of uncertainty began to enjoy the strange sensation of this gentle touch.

In a harsh universe, a gentle touch is like one small glowing star iluminating the darkness.
I once had the idea of a picture where the trio de danger still were puppies, living on the streets on some dark planet, with no one to depend on, having only each other. Bergamo was the protector, while Lavender was allways sick and Basil weak and allways afraid. Maybe I will draw this one day.
