Is it pretty rare that Big Macintosh gets the chance to swallow Discord whole, or is that something that's pretty much a frequent occurrence between the two of them?

Firstly it was hard to defeat Discord in this vorish game - jhe is old expert, so Mac was getting frustraited by being everytime swallowed despite new strategies.

Dumbfounding him using power of his muscles and avoid his magic by defensive spells and try swallow him when everything go well.

Everything depends on situation... sometimes Discord is happy that his pupil listens you and his lessons aren't wasted, but there are also times when he really has a fancy for eating pony but pony fights back and swallows him... what forces him to change strategy everytime when he has carvings.

So would it all be 50/50 whenever Discord swallows Big Mac thanks to his strategies, or when that Alicorn manages to do that to him instead when he finds a way to gain an advantage over Discord to start with?
