Turning this into almost a sorta side series haha, But folks seem interested in it. I am hoping to move on from copper but in the mean time I have a lot of old copper pipes to break up and shape, so copper tools will continue in this moment.
This was made from a larger, thicker walled pipe, the pipe has also contributed to some other tools too as it was a large pipe, first it was hammered until one of the walls gave way, it was then annealed in a campfire and flattened into a very crude sheet. This knife was broken out by securing the sheet inbetween pieces of concrete and bending it back and forth until it gave way, with a series of perferations made by hammering the metal with a sharp brass bolt to weaken things to break in a certain way. It was actually immensely difficult as the shape got smaller and smaller there was so little room to hammer the copper which made some shapes not tear easy. You can see a mild cheat as I used a vice to hold the pipe while I worked on it, But in the end I got a vaguely knife shaped object. After that it was smashed with a large rock a few times and then sharpened on a small brick of natural sandstone that was one of two gifts from a friend.
The sheath came next, its nothing neat, just a piece of rawhide (in the dragonscape scalehide would be used obviously) that was wrapped around itself and then bound with a piece of cord. It works though and holds onto the knife well enough, not fancy but it works.
for the handle it was a piece of a hawthorn stick that had broken off a hawthorn tree in a recent windstorm that hadn't rotted yet. I tied a leather cord in the center of it and split it down the middle with the copper blade, the cord kept it from splitting any further than I would of wanted. I used the knife some more to carve out a channel that was slightly too big, then I wrapped the stick with some sinew from a friend, and as everything dried together I dabbed some traditional hide glue onto it all to help it get solid. I set the tang of the knife into the channel with a sliver of hide to make sure it was snug, filled the channel with a liberal amount of glue and topped it off with a small bit of cord.
With everything rock solid the knife is set. This sorta knife isn't the sort of big knife for big woodworking projects or batoning, its small and its copper. So a knife like this is more suited to things like processing foods or soft materials, or for skinning and butchering animals. For me if I need a stout blade for woodworking the axe (and hopefully coming adze) will do those jobs well so having a small blade for small tasks is great. Might become my favorite box opener to start a conversation!
Of course in the context of the dragonscape, Copper blades have competition with blades made of bone, glass, chitin, manaflint and sometimes lithics. this would be a mediumish blade for a drek size wise as they are generally smaller with smaller hands. Blades would come in a massive variety of shapes and sizes, though smaller utility blades like these would certainly appear in one way or another in most villages. Some might come from pipes, some might come from pieces of barstock or soft roundstock hammered flat.
Scalehide and scaleather are slightly different from mammalian hides and leather, more like crocodile leather and hide, there is also amphibian hide of course but that is still a good bit different. Sinew is something that a huge variety of creatures have and i tend to consider mostly 1 to 1 in the dragonscape.
As for glues Hide glue and pine pitch glues are common, there are also glues made of dragonscape latex that are a decent option. There is also alchemical glues that some drekir might make that may be much tougher and better overall glues but... a lot harder to make.
Overall from the tests I have done at home (cutting veggies, carrots, apples, meats, whittling soft woods) it does it's job well! And might just become a stylish little thing i carry around with me as a general utility knife. Copper works good enough and as i said before, it seems like a fun little convo starter.
