The great bear was easily twice the size of Wing's horse. Its teeth were as long as her fingers and its claws were like daggers. Its fur was the color of old snow impacted into ice, forever in melting on the highest crags. Except now it stained as red as a king's ruby along with much of the snow around the clearing. The old monster had fought hard, its scarred muzzle and paws a testament to the fact that it was a veteran of many winters that had survived many encounters with others of its kind along with foolhardy hunting parties.
And now it was dead, its heart eaten straight out of its chest while life had still pumped through it.
"Just like the bandits at the fort," she mused as she fingered the jagged ribs around the wound. Whatever had done this was on a rampage and showed no signs of slowing down even as it made its way down the slow incline of the foothills.
She peered south, looking down into the valley and saw the distant green of firelight, probably a village settled near a lake fed by the snow melt that would surely come in spring.
But tonight was the Winter Solstice, the longest, darkest night of the year, and the streams of the hills were frozen as solid as the jewel like spatters of blood in the snow.
She exhaled a silver cloud into the bitter air with determination and a twinge of fear. Something was heading for that village and by her code, she had to stop it. But she was tired, and hungry and cold. This would not be an easy fight and if the effort didn't kill her, those things might very well on a night like this.
Deep in the woods, something yowled in the night, a furious, lonely cry, not quite man, not quite beast. Reign stomped his hoof impatiently.
"Once more into the dark, old friend," she said as she mounted. "Nightmares do not slay themselves. But that village had better have breakfast."
