At that point, you're really looking into what traits of the characters overlap and cutting out those that arent shared by too many of them, rather than trying to clutter the design with too many elements. I think it helps to make the character look like an OC rather than a specific fanart character since you begin to hit on just the traits you like about them disconnected from the origin medium.
