Sometimes eying a pose references while sketching is useful, but other times you can expend too much effort trying to duplicate the reference.
It's best to instead practice individual compositional elements or the parts of the pose from the reference image that you want in the image, then completely the rest of the pose in a way that best communicates the kind of body language you want to put in the image.
Some of the references I use are just facial expressions which I will draw first, then try to match the position of the rest of the body to.
