Original Species: Crimson-Crested Death-Beak
The Crimson-Crested Death-Beak is the largest land predator on Vogelheim. At a mass of 4 tons, it is more than capable of taking down prey animals such as the Greater Gworp and the Mammoth Bird. Due to its massive build, it's not a very good runner, however, being a large prey specialist, tremendous running speed is not a necessity.
These birds primarily use their massive beaks to attack their prey. The initial attack is meant to stagger the target, which is then followed by a kick that ideally causes it to fall over. Once its prey is on the ground, the Death-Beak holds it down with the help of one of the hooked talons on its feet and delivers a decisive peck to the head or neck to finish the hunt.
On rare occasions, these predators venture to the shorelines of Vogelheim in order to prey on young seals. Once they have their meaty prize, they will mostly disregard all other creatures in the area, unless they threaten to steal their meal.
Fortunately for researchers, these birds are not very agile runners which, on top of their unimpressive running speed, makes them fairly easy to avoid. And if they have food already in front of them, they are easy to pass by outright.
