This weeks prompt was 'break' - sometimes, however, something comes across, and you just have to break away from what you had in mind, and say something that's important for those who have gone before.
In my life, I have dealt with ghosts. Sometimes they come to you in the oddest fashion. I do hope I did Ben Woodard justice. He did nothing wrong, and yet he died with a simply question on his lips - 'Why?'
I wish you a most hallowed and happy Veteran's Day...

"Why, 'twas a very wicked thing!"
Said little Wilhelmine.
"Nay... nay... my little girl," quoth he,
"It was a famous victory.

Do all those that lie here, know why did they die
And did they believe when they answered the call
Did they really believe that this war would end war
Well the sorrow the suffering the glory the pain
The killing the dying it was all done in vain
Oh willy McBride it all happened again
And again, and again, and again, and again
Did they beat the drum slowly?
Did they play the fife lowly?
Did they sound the death March as they lowered you down?
Did the band play the last post and chorus?
Did the pipes play the Flowers of the Forest?
And did they believe when they answered the call
Did they really believe that this war would end war
Well the sorrow the suffering the glory the pain
The killing the dying it was all done in vain
Oh willy McBride it all happened again

I loved that song... almost 45 years ago I heard it for the first time, sung by June Tabor. Those were different times Wirez old buddy.

“I held to the lies of my leaders,” he whispered,
“As the foe held close to the lies of theirs.
Who was correct in their beliefs then?
And does the world even care?”
With one stanza you have laid open the cruel pointlessness of human conflict.
Thank you
for your service
for your creative generosity
for everything.
