Yeah but once you include the cost of shipping, goods and services tax, LHD exemption, storage for twelve months since privately imported cars cannot be sold for a year after importation and plane tickets to the US to buy the car (car dealers can’t import cars more than seven years old and LHD cars under 20 must be converted to RHD so few will) which will probably add up to NZ$10k on what was paid for it in the states before anything is done to fix it.

Yeah and it also has to pass an extensive engineering inspection before it is registered. In the end it’s probably cheaper to import a good one than a worn out one.
That’s why a 20 year old Cadillac will often cost as much as a new Kia. That said I know which car I’d rather spend $20k on.
