Defend from what? We have people plotting to attack America every day, also Marines and other service branchs come to the aid of other nations during times of trouble.

I lived and worked in Madison for the past year and a half attending school there. Crazy to see you're from there and were also in my hometown area at Arsenal Island recently as well! My hometown and current residence is Davenport, IA. Small world, eh?

The hecklers, while well within their first amendment rights, are idiots. And I'm well within my own first amendment rights calling them such.

The leaders may be idiots and or corrupt, but the servicemembers have no control over that.

Hate the war if you feel it is unjust, but do not hate the warriors. After they make the choice to join, they have no choice over where they are sent or who they are ordered to fight.

And as to 'Defend from what?' let me point something out. does ANY developed nation exist today without a standing army? Look at those that claim to not have an army. Canada is still part of the British Commonwealth, therefore, their forces are technically part of the British military, and it is that military that protects them. Japan is prevented by the WWII surrender documents from having a standing army, but their 'self defense force' is a standing army in all but name (and the ability to legally operate outside the national borders). A nation without an army will not survive if a neighbor casts a greedy eye their way, international treaties be damned. The UN can only do so much with sanctions and embargoes, and when military force is called for, which country sends the majority of the manpower to back up the UN's call for military power? the US, for better or worse, is currently holding the role of the 'World's Policemen.' Until all the nations of the world can coexist peacefully, the US will always need a standing army to insure no nation gets the bright idea to invade us.

As to the 'non-national' forces (aka 'terrorist groups') we are now facing more often, we may still be trying to find the best way to combat these groups, but the standing forces military is the best starting point, we just need to work out what sort of training and unit configuration is best for 'asymetric warfare.'

... I'm not gonna argue with your ideologies, but, taking quote from Rabbi - the heckling is not in regards to where they're going. It IS what they are - warriors. Fighters. "Killers-in-training."

A peaceful society cannot exist without some force to keep the less peaceful neighbors from causing trouble.

I would love to live in a world without fear or violence, a wold of peace, love and, yes, sex. But utopias only exist in novels, and they usually exist to be threatened by a violent neighbor, forcing them to enlist the Hero, the Misfit, the person who does not fit the Utopian ideals of peace, in order to send that Hero out to defeat the violent neighbors.

But enough political talk, that stuff just leads to arguments. Let's all get naked and have a make-up orgy!

These protesters should be at least be grateful that they don't live in some totalitarian / dictator regimes they always think so highly of. Let's see if these guys have the balls to boo People's Liberation Army or some other real Killers in Training.

I don't agree with some of the aims/theatres, but I too honour their commitment - it's a lifelong one, not just anonymous heckling that takes no thought, just to satisfy a pack mentality.

I'm a veteran , and I salute them. Those, are the real patriots.

Those who protect the ability to speak freely... Which in turn gets them heckled, and insulted. Tragic these times. Brave men one, and all. Good luck to'em.

Hey, to stand there and ignore the peanut gallery while they get sworn in-- in public at the Capitol building in Madison, mind you-- that's some commendable sets of kintama, there. I'd have applauded them too were I there.

They are "killers-in-training". It would be naive to say they are anything different. But as the old adage says, someone has to stand on that wall.

I hope they do their service with honor and dignity, and I thank them for the role they play. Best of luck to them all.

WHile I aplod their bravery, I have pesonal issies with the Marines. I know they are tough and I give respect to the ones who are in... it's just some of the tactics they use I am against.

Down to brass tacks tho, I support anyone who defends our country and respect the ones who have been laid to rest doing so.

I respect soldiers. I just don't always agree with the orders they're given. But that's not the fault of the soldiers, they ARE just doing their job. I think it shows a lot of class to get sworn in the way they did.

That would have been really cool to attend to. My brother served as a Marine, even did a tour or two in Iraq. I'm glad to have him home though, he's not gonna be my best man in my wedding for nothing.

I really hate people who heckle military recruits without any idea of where our county would be without them and what they have to go through. They're the type of people who, if a draft was ever issued, they'd skip the country to avoid it.

They had best go do a good job, otherwise Scotland will be very unhappy.

I cant think of any sane person heckling the armed forces... perhaps some of the messes politicians have gotten us into yes, but not the men and women them selfs. Perhaps they just wanted attention.
