I decided to do a 3D model of Temeraire.
This is very early, and neither the scales nor the beginnings of the harness are in any way final, just scouting out the look I want to give em.

An excellent start. A wider area will be needed for the wings, i think. Also, the wing flap will likely fun much of the length of the body, necessitating straps primarily along the front and back to hold the whole thing together (though the "belly strap" was mentioned). Additionally, the lower netting will be added, along with ropes and the like for aviators to clamber amongst. For inspiration: I would look at images of rigging of period ships, to lend the whole thing a naval air.
As for the dragon, great overall. I would make the neck somewhat more muscular along the base, and of course the shoulder and chest area will need to accommodate the massive wings the dragon uses to fly. Keep up the good work!

His scales should probably be smaller, remember that a musket ball (a half inch round ball of lead) can cause the scales to knot up around the wound if not properly dealt with (there was at least one mention of this in the books).
He probably also need more belly, he looks like he's undergoing mitosis. :x

I do agree with previous critique, yet of course he's gotten larger since the knot of scales part, methinks. Remember best his celestial wind weapon! Design him like he has a decent lung capacity and that the harness won't snap apart when he puffs himself up to use it...!
Remember as well there are dragons considered to have "concave bellies," and Temeraire isn't one of then. Of all Novik's dragons, he's one of the few gone long between decent meals, and still put through all the boring formations and grueling length flying and carrying more than his share - he should be well muscled and big and maybe at least not gaunt.
Really nice that you've taken on a big project like him. I have a 3D model of my character in Maya, 3DS Max too - maybe they'll get to meet one day ;)
