There's an interesting rumor about Gengar: that it's the malevolent, fully-manifested specter of a dead Clefairy.
They have similar silhouette's, and in the original games Clefairies had a supernatural aspect. But as far as any research reveals, that's just a coincidence.

Let me correct myself: the common interpretation of the rumor is actually that Gengar is some sort of creature created from a Clefairy shadow.
This is actually more interesting. It suggests that there's negative feelings in a Clefairy which it foolishly tries to seal off instead of addressing. A shadow in and of itself has no life or malevolence. Something has to provide it.
In the Pokedex, the Gastly and Haunter are labeled "Gas" Pokemon. They seem like a Gengar that's just too weak to keep distinct form. But once it's gained enough experience and strength to build a body resembling it's origin, it's complete... and acknowledged as a "Shadow" Pokemon.
