not sure if this is a serious question or a joke, but i will bite anyways. :Þ
it has to do with alignment of electric charges. in magnetic objects that do not have magnetism the charges are pointing in different (usually just random) directions. in a magnet the charges are all pointing in the same direction. if you split a magnet in half you just end up with a smaller magnet. :Ð

Today at my town's christmas crafts fair (It was like the dealers den for christmas con) I picked up a pamphlet on magnetic therapy from a table that was selling magnetic jewelry. I had my family in hysterics as I read the wretched thing aloud.
There IS however some interesting unpublished work to come out of my lab showing very definite effects of magnets on... well I don't want to say because it isn't published but it's an experiment a third grader could set up and demonstrate some amazing things and we still don't know what is going on exactly. I do agree that the medical applications are nothing but snake oil.

People first say that science is a con to get us all to follow scientists' lead...then they complain about getting conned when their 'magic magnets' didn't remove their ulcer or repair their broken bones.
But magnets ARE medicine: MRI scans! Well...not medicine as such, but a tool to see what's wrong with the patient and diagnose does count as medicine in my book.

I think I love this man more than previously. How far along are we on genetic engineering male childbearing so he can have my babbies? :D
Anyhow, opportunistic shameless plug of my favorite podcast the Skeptic's Guide to the Universe, about all news and matters on pscience and pseudopscipence:

Give me a shout if you also listen :} Would love to contact other interested furses.

I wonder if Kage saw a similar presentation given by Michael Crichton in 2005: http://crichton-official.com/video-.....dependent.html

Magnets do have medical purrrpose lol... used as tools mostly (magnetic resonance scanner, then that machine that acelerates the regrowth of the cartilage on the joints, also some makeshift surgeon tools during WW had magnets on the end to pull out steel (and similar) bullets/shrapnel out of the body)
althou i must admit most of the tools i mentioned are wery powerful electromagnets that can affect even non metal objects (but the one for the cartilage basically draws and keeps the building materials like iron and some minerals needed for regeneration thus speeding the healing that would last for months to weeks)
and yea i do know cartilage is mostly calcium. I also heard that some heavy metal poisonings were "cured" bu filtering the blood (basically a machine would pump the blood throu some filters and throu a wery powerful magnetised tube and the filtered blood would be pumped back into the body) but i didn't see that one in purrrson...

Fascinating :) I do recognize that guy from someplace (sorry, I live in a barn).
Some horse people are obsessed with how magnets fix all their horses' ailments. There are companies with booths at trade shows, staffed by very handsome blonde men with Scandinavian accents, who will tell you all about how their magnetic blankets will help you. Help by lightening your wallet and shrinking your bank account, perhaps!
