On January 15th, 2009, Herald dozed off for fifteen minutes while sitting outside during his garage sale and had the following dream:
“How much is this one worth?”
Herald saw a dragon girl pointing at him and gesturing to another dragon with elder glasses and a dull gray shirt, now molded into a tunic.
“I don’t know,” Herald responded.
“I wasn’t talking to you,” the dragon girl snapped at him. Her flirtatious eyes scared him.
“It’s an older model. Obsolete,” the elder dragon said. He pulled out a pad and paper. He noticed a small naked human doll taped to the paper. The elder dragon grunted, picked off the garnish and threw it to the side. He eyed a row of numbers which looked bigger to Herald than they really were.
“You can have it for half off but you have to promise to take care of it,” the dragon elder said.
The dragon girl raised her hand and Herald caught himself noticing the wrinkles along the palm and the unspoiled nature of the ivory claws. “I solemnly swear to take care of this good half as long as I shall live. Is there a discount?”
“Yes. Two percent,” the elder dragon said. He picked up a cigarette in one scene and a cigar in the other.
“WAIT!” Herald yelled and stepped forward. It was only upon moving that he realized he had a “for sale” sign on his T-shirt. He saw himself in both cigarette and cigar realities side-by-side in cinema.
“Don’t you know that can kill you?” Herald took the cigar out of the dragon’s mouth and stomped it. A bonfire grew under his feet and consumed the whole yard sale without hurting him or the dragons, who didn’t seem to mind.
“Don’t you know that can kill us?” Herald took the cigarette out of the dragon’s mouth, placed it in his own, pulled out a lighter from behind his back and lit the cigarette. His body flash-charred and he blew out the smoke like a humanoid mass of liquid hot magma.
“One of these has a future. One of these does not,” the elder dragon said, pushing the unburnt Herald onto the scorched earth. The dragon girl knelt down, shook her head and patted Herald like a child.
The scorched Herald was met by the dragon girl. She held her arm in his and they walked off into the barren wastes together. Herald threw the cigarette and it burnt out.
Then, he woke up.
