A birthday that seemed as routine as any other day wasn’t typical, but the way Gemma saw it, any birthday started that way until other creatures interacted. She’d taken the day off work to finally finish polishing a manuscript she’d recently completed, while she had shared loving calls with her parents, who she would visit that weekend. Her older brother Wallace, however, was abroad for a business trip, and the time zone meant that he wouldn’t be awake yet.
Just when she had got deep enough into her concentration, a sudden but familiar voice jolted her out of her trance, along with the crackling sound of sparklers and the sweet, unmistakable smell of sugar, jam and icing. Her fur stood up, but with a breath, her instincts soon calmed.
“Surprise!” cried Kara as she balanced a multi tiered cake with raspberry icing on a wide plate in one paw. It looked like an utterly delightful treat, and she couldn’t wait to dig in.
“How did you get in here, Kara?” asked Gemma.
“Nice to see you too.” said Kara acerbically. “You gave me a key, remember?”
“Oh that’s right, yeah. Yeah, just working on my manuscript right now.”
“That’s gonna be a hoot!”
“I don’t know. Here’s hoping so, anyway.”
“Well, happy birthday to you, kittykins!”
“That’s so sweet of you, Kara! And that cake looks really good.” Kara showed her a toothy grin. “Say, why don’t we split it over a film? You wanted to show me the new Gangster Alley one, right?”
“Yeah, that’s it.”
“I can put this on hold for a little while. I mean, it is my birthday.”
“That’s the spirit!”
A very late upload of a gift I received for my birthday in September, yes. But I still thought it worth posting even if I did keep putting it off. ^^;
Got quite a start when
itsEsther revealed she’d got me this lovely image of Kara sneaking up behind Gemma while she edits a manuscript, made by the talented 
Pato_Vixen. Fancy breaking somebody’s concentration! But a little downtime for a celebration is never not a good thing. :3
I treasure the gesture, and will treasure you for many years to come. 💙
