The problem is bigger than the sailor first imagined. Looking around he noticed the poisonous fuzzy growth around, eating into the wood, eating away the wood. It must be a wonder that this ship hasn't fallen apart yet. This fungi is dangerous beyond imagination.

there was a science-fiction trilogy, where they found a world where everything is fungus, even the intelligent life. and while they were investigating, their vehicle stopped dead as some mutated mushrooms were busy eating the gear's lube...
the series had interesting ideas, but the ending left me dissatisfied. :/

yeah. one time I discarded a book with less than ten pages left to the end because what it lead to was so... badly thought out.
some other books I simply stopped reading because the author just rambled on without starting the actual story, and 100 of 300 pages were already read and there was no sign of anything exciting.
one of them was written by a philosopher. apparently, being able to write a thesis doesn't mean one can write a story as well.
