Newest Gals: Hope and Faith
The newest rats I'm fostering for MRR, and my first direct surrender from them (direct surrender is when the owner giver the rats to you, rather than recieving them from another foster home etc). Currently
Tikky is helping me quaratine them, good thing because one of them turns out to have a URI.
The cage was in poor shape when I got them:

Yes...the water is really that color. Not a photography trick O.o The cage was quite small and crowded for the little guys. Thankfully, the person that took them recognized she wasn't a very good home and made the effort to find a rescue to place them in.
They're quite cute. Hope is the hooded. She's a lot shyer than her sister, Faith who is a charmer. She is very friendly.

It was green and looks very much like algae =/
On a different note, it's best not to give them water-vitamins because most break down in the sunlight so you'd have to use an opaque waterbottle and even then it's often useless--that and some rodents won't drink treated water due to the change in taste. Dehydration can be a big issue. No reason to give vitamins anyways because a good rat diet not only contains all the nutrients they need but is also very cheap...

true, this was way back when, when i had a pair of devil's testicals, also known as cambells dwarf hamsters, and spoiled em rotten XD
on a side note; its really funny to watch a hamster stuff live mealworms in thier cheeks.
by the way, did inari ever have that second spare-sperm litter? i have had a small handfull of these litters and its quite fascinating. My theory is it's more delayed implantation rather than stored sperm, but it might not be, due to the fact of how does a rat store some embryos while letting others implant.... But i also had a doe retain sperm for a coupple weeks without having a first litter, so she had pups a good month after being taken out of the co-ed weanling fattening bin.
You're right about alot of rat fanatics starting as feeder breeders tho, i never even bothered with rats, and now they are absolutely fascinateing to observe.
That, and my personal pet rat gives me manicures by nibbling my cuticles.

Understood about the vitamins--it's amazing how care changes with time neh? When I was kid rabbits were hutch animals. Now that's considered cruel except for food-rabbits. We did the best we could for the time though, read up a lot and followed the care guidelines.
LOL my most-favorite-ever rat was a nail-nibbler. Best manicurist I've ever had =3
She didn't, thank god. We were very worried, but the time came and went without babies. She's now queen of the cage with her 2 daughters and their harem of one Fonzie the nuetered male XD
I admit, if you told me 3 years ago how big rats would become a part of my life I would have responded with "ew...they smell and they bite." boy was I wrong!

LOL, sadly i still have to raise them as food, but i am very protective of my feeder's rights. And i know about " back in the days" when i was a kid, our first cat was outdoor only and got fed cheap cat food, and our rabbits were hutched too ( but had a big 8X4 with a 2X3 shelter attached, and had free range in the day, i miss watching the bunnies free range ; ;)
even still i had to take my rat in to the vet on the sly because pocket pets just dont see vets as far as my dad's concerned ( yet he literally said " money dosent matter with her" when we had to take our dog to an emerg vet- sadly nothing could be done then >.<)
Lol Nochez gets pushy when he gets into manicure mode; you try and move your hand away he grabs it with his teeth and grabs your finger and yanks it back. He's starting to get to be a bit too pushy with me socially, but i guess hes just having hormonal issues since i put him with females again. Now if he dosent wanna play " tickle ur bum" he will grab my hand with his teeth, and try to shove it away o_O
lol...as for does with eunucs.... do they get frustrated and try to hum them like my doe rabbits would with the neutered males? It was funny. Theyd go at him like " ok, see? this is how" and he would just be " ...durrrrrp? * munch munch*"
Or do they still retain some idea of what to do, like my cat? watching him try and hump our spayed female was funny. Mom compared it to " hopping on a bike only to find out there are no pedals"

Hehe, they generally hump eachother with him looking rather left out XD I think it depends on the male, some are interested but others aren't. He seems to be but the girls ignore him.
My parents were the same way, even with the cats. The only animal "worth' going to a et was a dog apparently >_<

O.M.G! INSTANT FAVE! Your Hope looks like my Mary Jane, cept MJ dosen't have black down her front legs like Hope. Awe, Sweety, I really admire you for your adoption work you do, it does my ratty heart good to see someone help those lil one who deserve so much more than what they had been dealt. *hugs* You make me sooo happy!
Thanks #^_^# MRR is a wonderful rescue to work with. Rat rescuing has really been a big thing for me, and it's really affirming to find a way to help animals for me. I'm still wrestling my carnivore inclination vs. my love of animals and concern for their welfare. It's my way of giving back. The key is to not fall in love with and adopt your own fosters!!! (We've been through this a couple times now...hence the newest addition to our family, Fonzie XD)
I find it very very hard to adopt out our lil ones when we have planned litters. We kept 4 out of the last litter, LOL. They are so sweet and loyal and have such personalities you can't help but fall head over tail for them! I think you are close to being a hero here at this house! *hugs* PLEASE keep up the awesome work! and post lots of pics of your ratties. I'm working on getting mine up, though I think I"m putting them in scraps like you suggested
