Well in the book they have blinders to block forward vision. So its all trust in the rider that you don't brain yourself on a cliffside XD

I thoguht Dinosaurs were intelligent in that series? I never read it.. why would they do that?

They are intelligent. This is a sort of sport if you will that is practiced among Skybax riders. They were a sort of armor and decorate their skybax with ornate armor as well as padding to prevent injury. The forward blinders both hinder forward vision and protect the eyes. Sort of like blinders used on some horses. They can still sort of see, but it helps to have a trustworthy rider that can give subtle hints with body movements so that the skybax has better control of where it is going in flight. and sometimes a rider is knocked off and has to parachute to the ground. So this tells me that the skybax can also see enough to land itself with the blinders on.

So the Skybax (Pterodons?) are also intelligent?

Skybax (quetzalcoatlus....yeah the secret of why I like them is revealed XD) are also intelligent, but unlike some species was unable to develop human speech. Since while the skybax has a rider, it will control the steering and where it goes and knows where to go upon being given orders. Though a human rider does have some say in the control. Its really a relationship thing. Like if a skybax senses you have fear in it or flying it will not allow you to ride.

huh...gonna have to go back and read through some of the books then....don't recall the jousting off hand... seems to me a fine mesh of some sort would work better to help protect the eyes, yet still allow the Skybax to see. Maybe reinforced with thin metal rods or something

I'm not to sure how it works exactly, I haven't exactly finished this book XD its from the newest of the series, journey to chandera. I just copied the image I saw in the book as best I could ^^;

hehehe, yeah, you'd have to have some serious trust there...though when i first saw it i thought it was some sort of blinder hood for keeping avians "asleep" or at least calmer

One must speculate on the accident rate...especially since closing velocities are a good bit higher than knights jousting on a pair of draft horses.
