When I begin developing a character, they tend to fall into one of two groups. Either they're inseparably tied to their setting or they're not. Most are setting-tied, either because I include parts of the setting as an essential part of who they are or because they aren't interesting enough to me to bother. Nashaya is one of my "migrating" characters, in that I find ways for her to appear in other stories or settings. Originally a bellydancer and friend of McClaw, when I began writing in Chaser's "the Terran Wars" universe I came up with a pop music band and needed a singer. I almost immediately thought of Nashaya. Here she is on stage in front of the rest of the band. As a singer, Nashaya is one part Shakira, one part Evanesence, and one part Kate Bush. She doesn't just sing for her audience, she shimmies and dances, pulling them into the performance so the message of the song gets through.
