He's basically a notorious shifty salesman of suspicious stuff (of the supernatural variety). He slinks around in the shadows, usually dealing with creatures of the dark, but frequently roping normal folks into his trade as well.
Like all back-alley salesmen though, his merchandice isn't exactly reliable 100% of the time, and given the nature of the market: you're liable to lose more than your money with his deals.
As for his backstory and motives - really they're inconsequential. He's been in the trader business for a very very very long time. Easy to lose track of "big picture" things when you've been dead for who knows how long.
