I'm constantly amazed how little most people from the US know about Canada.
Have you ever seen Rick Mercer's "Talking to Americans"? It's a hoot. ;)

i liked my experience before:
"a/s/l?"
me: "19/male/fortuna" (at the time)
"young blood huh? where is fortuna? sounds like food."
me: "california"
"isn't that over in asia somewhere?"
looked the person up, and they lived over in new york. kinda hard to take seriously, but....face paw^^'

LOL!!! OK, if it doesn't have political lines it's harder to find where I live on a world map but I can still get close. And I'm talking city. Of course I live in Philly which is a port city right near Jersey so I have things a little easier than some....Plus I'm a hockey fan, thank you father for making sports abundantly available and having whatever home teams that were on broadcast on the television without missing many games. Just by following two local teams I know where a few places in North America are.
Kinda reminds me of my french persons problem ---> http://www.furaffinity.net/view/4244026
well actually American school never teach us much about other countrys, they usually just state the name and thats it.... and now in Arizona they are removing anythign from the school criteria that might insight thought on how better other country's might be
but yeah... i must also admit >< im guilty of the same thing in the comic

I know it is a famous stereotype that Americans are supposed to be very ignorant on Geography (and indeed many are)
but personally I have found worse examples among other nationalities.
I have been to countries where "The world cannot be round as they say... people on the down half would fall off" is still an after dinner topic of conversation.
Also in Spain, all non-European people of Latin origin are called "South Americans", regardless of how far above the Equator their homeland may be.

Honestly, the two things I know about Quebec is that seemingly lots of people in Ontario (especially out around London) make fun of "Dem Dar Koo-beckers" and that, at least, as was my experience... When I started babbling *very* badly broken french at them, suddenly the dock manager, and receiving clerk of this one place I went, went from saying they didn't understand English, to being perfectly fluent ;)
This might give (hopefully Thunderstep) someone giggles: "Non, Non Englais" Me: "babble babble" (I think I said something utterly wrong - he raised an eyebrow and looked much-less-happy) so that after a few moments of muttering under my breath "Uh... I know its in here somewhere... please don't get any more pissed off looking... c'mmon where is it?! *flip flip flip*" The first guy just said "Oh for fucks sake just use English already!" I must have looked utterly shocked, because he just about died laughing.
That and why do drivers from Quebec drive 50% more insane than drivers from Ontario, and 150% more insane than drivers from Saskatchewan? I never figured that out. On the freeway, the guy from Ontario will be going 120 (kph) ... 20 over, so begging for points. The guy from Saskatchewan will be going 85 (fifteen under..... arrgh!) BUT the guy from Quebec will be doing 190 and lane surfing... while giving the obvious American the finger for being in a "too slow" truck ;)
(Note: if you're an American, think a hard "Q" (like a pool que) and then Beck, like the singer. ... or if "The Good People" of Tron-Toe (kudos if anyone gets the joke) are to be believed, "Keh-BeC")
Oh, as a side note: if it wasn't for you guys trying to kinda almost but not really secede from Canada back when I was in Elementary school... I highly doubt our "wondrously high quality" Edificationization (Bush's words, not mine) system here in the US would have ever taught me much more than "Canada to the north, Mexico to the south."
I agree with the comment above-- next time just tell 'em yer from mars and see what happens ;)

The" no parler english" is that Canada is supposed to be a bilingual country, and in Quebec we spoke french. But no one tries to speak french. When you go to your corner drug store and the cashier tells you "sorry, no speak french", it's kinda ennerving. But at some point, we have to know english because some really don't know french at all. Yay for the not so really bilingual country !
I can see that. Personally, my opinion is "use the language of the land" -- which is why I tried my best to use french.
I still say that I can't believe someone wouldn't know Quebec wasn't in North America though. That's someone that needs smacked upside the head. Hard. ... with a blunt object.

How can this happen? You're the only guys in North America that are predominantly Francophone...? You are still predominantly French speakers right? My knowledge of demographics is admittedly outdated.
Then again, we have Jeff Foxworthy with "Are you smarter then a fifth grader?"

Sad as it is, there's a large portion of Americans who don't even know where Washington D.C. is, our capital city. Honestly, it's a mix of uncaring parents, poor school administration which would rather lower the standards than fail a child and give them "low self esteem," and the general laziness of this country's population. Sad, but true.
