Just as promised, here's a follow up to the renewed gen 2 starters. This was a weird one, starting off as just an idea, developing just the face of Noctowl (which I adore so much!!!) and then coming up with the full design. Honestly, I like Hoothoot's name, but that's pretty much it for me with these two. Design-wise, they are both pretty bland: Hoothoot has that weird one-no-it's-two-feet thing going on, but I'm very upset at Noctowl for being really literally just a huge owl... Theme-wise, again, Hoothoot is cute and has a clock theme while Noctowl... has psychic powers? Ok, that can tie in with time powers of some sort...
Anyway, for this renewal, I wanted to really to have both of these pokemon being related to time. That's when the idea of a rotating (clock)face came! It's so cute and funny! Look at him sleeping~ Ahem... then I looked up traditions with related to owl in Japan. As I said in my renewed gen 2 starters, I want Johto to feel very traditional and antique, resembling the more ancient Hisui than the modern Kanto next door. At first I made the bod of Noctowl like it was wearing a kimono or traditional Ainu clothing so that it could resemble the fukurou or Cikap-kamuy, but they didn't work well. Then, inspired by many Mega Noctowls online, and by @Pkmn_Amatista's Noctowl, I made it still bird-like but with a more composed pose, more upright and having more humanoid features, such as larger feet and longer legs. Then came Hoothoot which I made more rotund and more owlet-like, without the weird one-no-it's-two-feet thing. This way, it also looks like an alarm clock, opposed to the grandfather clock design of its evolution. Since we have way too many brown Normal pokemon, why not some blue and silver instead~ Their shiny would be golden (a reference to Cikap-kamuy, said to have tears of gold and silver).
For the typing, they will still remain Normal/Flying, with both of them still being able to learn Psychic moves but less by level (more Flying and Normal types) and having even some Steel coverage (another reference to Cikap-kamuy). Stat wise, they can have a little bonus, but I think they are all good. As for the names, Hoothoot is just adorable, and works well in this form. Noctowl sound cool and I like it very much, but doesn't fit well. I've struggled to name this new form, to then settle on Cluckowl (clock+luck+owl).
Let me know what you think of them~ I frankly love how Cluckowl turned out, especially his weird spinning face~
