Hibiscus Contract - September 2020 (10)
<<< PREV | FIRST | NEXT >>>
CW: Set in a real-ish world during the pandemic; so, expect COVID, death due to COVID, pro-science politics, plus lots of food/discussing food and alcoholic drinks.
September 2020: Odysseus and Theodora discuss the ins and outs of tasting emotions.
On today's episode of Things Nobody Asked About:
- Each person's emotions are represented kind of like a snowflake, where each arm is one family of emotions - amazement, terror, ecstasy, grief, etc. (Like the color wheel of emotions that you can find, but in 3D instead of 2D.) This is why there's a sunburst-like pattern on Odysseus' sigil. All demons that synth emotions have some variation of this on their sigil, though it's not exactly a like.
- A demon can sometimes tell if someone has a mood disorder based on the shape of the snowflake and the arrangement of the arms. There are demons that choose to have their mild-mannered alter egos be psychiatrists because of that, and their job is to better understand and utilize human emotions. A few of them do it because they genuinely want to help humans and further the field of psychiatry buuuuuuuut not many.
I struggled with getting in the information that I wanted while still having it sound like an actual conversation, but hopefully it came out alright!

Oh, now that IS an interesting thought... If she starts to have real feelings for Odysseus beyond friendship, he will know IMMEDIATELY... I wonder how he will react?
Seeing the thought process of a demon is very interesting,. He cares about little aside from himself and perhaps a bit for his own kind. Current company excluded, he seems to see humanity as little more than cattle to be milked for sustenance from time to time.
Also, the conversation seemed to flow very naturally, including the sudden change in subject when it got uncomfortable. XD

He's typically polite enough not to say anything about emotions that she's not expressly telling him about, but it may certainly change if it's something now serious.
For other humans, Odysseus isn't as bad as some, but it's not good for business for a demon to be too sympathetic - like a vegan at a butcher shop, lol.
And thank you! My notes had a lot of exposition and no indication about how to make it work. Past me was kinda lazy in that regard.
