I definitely had a few different themes I wanted to incorporate while coming up with the idea, and I think you can interpret the resulting illustration in different ways! (And I encourage you to!) In my friends' defense, these are probably what used to fill in those natural "lulls" of conversational silence you have in multi-party groups. I think those lulls of silence might have been replaced with lulls of silence while looking at phones (because it's somewhat less awkward, possibly?). It doesn't take long for normal conversation to resume! I also think this might be less common now after the pandemic lockdowns, because there's more appreciation for when we are able to see each other in-person - but when it does happen, it still always feels a little bizarre to me!
