This year marked the 50th anniversary of the debut of one of PBS (Public Broadcasting System)'s most infamous logos, designed by Herb Lubalin and featuring the introduction of PBS's iconic "P-Head" logo, but facing left and acting as the P in "PBS" in a very modernized abstract typeface. This appeared at the end of most of PBS's TV programs from 1971 to 1984, usually in the form of a primitive animation against a black background accompanied by funky synthesizer music. This was known for scaring quite a few small kids back in the 70s and early 80s (but was luckily before my time), especially since it'd come on after shows like "Mister Rogers' Neighborhood," "Sesame Street" and "The Electric Company." So when I saw these T-shirts being sold at the Newbury Comics I was visiting on National Record Store Day back in June, I couldn't resist buying one!
The submission title comes from this cute set of 1972 on-air promos utilizing this stylized PBS logo and featuring a very mellow 1970s-ish jingle. A lot tamer than the actual closing logo!

Yup, I remember that logo! I also remember when TV channels signed on in the morning and signed off at night. Here's my favorite WGBH sign-on: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2RKFZKxTwjE
