In 1956, Continental became a separate division apart from Ford, Mercury, and Lincoln. Only one Continental was offered in that first year: the Mark II. Even though some people referred to it as a Lincoln Continental, It was never a Lincoln.

The Continental Mark II was envisioned as a revival of the Grand Classic concept ala the Packards, Pierce-Arrows and Duesenbergs of the 1930s. It was largely hand-built, and even at $10,000 each, the Ford Motor Company still lost money on every one they sold.
Howard Hughes, Elizabeth Taylor, Bob Hope and Elvis Presley owned Mark IIs. It was a car for the stars.
And no...it's not a Lincoln. The Imperial had a similar identity crisis for the same reason; people still called it a "Chrysler Imperial". Breaking the Continental and Imperial names away from their parent divisions didn't seem to fly with the car-minded public.

I recall seeing a list of celebrities who owned a Mark II, though without your prompt, I couldn't have named any off the top of my head. I know that Sinatra sang a song about one. I also didn't know about the Imperial's "identity crisis". Thanks for sharing that tidbit of information. And while I am at it, thank you so much for the fave.
now that's interesting... Gloria and I watch a lot of Perry Mason, and I always see him driving a Lincoln, which tickles me because I learned to drive in a 1964 Lincoln town car - I have no idea the designation. My father always love the looks of a Mk IV, though he never owned one.
