Another TLG character drawn in the TLK movies artstyle, this time it's Askari's turn!
To be honest, I didn't like Askari when he first appeared in TLG and I used to think he was one of the ugliests characters in the whole show (I mean, I still dislike his looks in the series lol). That's until I came across this drawing by Silver-Wolf-17, in which she theorized that Askari's dark sclera might have been a common trait of primitive pridelander lions, and the sclera gradually became brighter as time went on. I love(d) this theory, so I'm incorporating it into my headcanon! Besides this, I also found this amazing photo in which it looks as if the lion had dark sclera and that's what inspired me to draw Askari!
So, about my version of Askari:
• His face is a mix of Mufasa's and Mega/Leo's features, with a big mouth (with the lower jaw bigger that the upper one), small eyes and the THICKEST eyebrows in the African continent.
• I kept his crooked/outlander-like snout, but made it less wrinkly.
• The ears are pointy (similar to adult Simba in TLK1) and small, yet very visible 'cos there isn't that much hair in front of them (compare to Mufasa's ears, which are surrounded by a thick mass of hair and barely visible most of the time).
• I decided to made Askari's mane incredibly long, covering his front legs and extending past his shoulders and belly, based on the Atlas/Barbary lion. He also has elbow tufts.
• I'm guessing he was supposed to have bright green+yellowish eyes??? That's what I went for, at least.
• It was a bit difficult getting Askari's colors since he only appears as a ghost, and personally, I don't mind if his color scheme here looks too similar to Mufasa's, Simba's or Kion's. He's their ancestor so I think it makes sense there would be some resemblance but who knows, I might tweak it a bit in the future. Click here to see Askari's colors better.
