More detailed headshots of my two Skirmisher characters Yurr and his big bad pirate mom Chur-R'Jal in black ink.
Whilst Yurr isn't physically outstanding at all (asides from two small scars on the side of his snout), he is clever and very open to trading and dealing with humans as a way to gather riches. Since he's been "teenage" friends with Dawn due to his mother dealing with the Rhaetian colonists early on in the war, he has a good grasp of the English language and better understanding of human culture than the average Kig-yar, which he uses in order to get good deals with humans, be it insurrectionists or UNSC alike. During the Covenant war he was officially an ally to the Covenant but as expected, he also worked for other factions here and there, when the Covenant wasn't looking. So an opportunist through and through, but a friendly one for the most part.
Now Chur-R'Jal is a rather ruthless Kig-yar pirate queen and though she's not actively looking for a fight, she will absolutely obliterate someone who crosses her or wants to start a rivalry with her pirate empire. She isn't herself under contract with the Covenant but works with them occasionally when the pay is right and is very fond of her clever son shipping some of their resources to her here and there for the black market. She is also very interested in trading with humans early on in the war, since she saw it as a good way to gather more riches but that is all interest she has for humans or anyone else that isn't direct kin to her. She considers the friendship between Yurr and Dawn rather silly and childish but tolerates it, since it brings money into her pockets. Plus that way she can stick it to the Covenant, since she has a disdain for them, ever since they killed Yurr's sister during the invasion of Rhaetia for collaborating with the infidels.
I drew her much taller and with a rougher face and bigger teeth than the average skirmisher, since I'm convinced, that Kig-yar are very similar to modern day raptors and therefor the females tend to be up to 1/3 as massive as males, as well as more aggressive and feisty. The ruff of thin feathers on her head was inspired by the Northern bald ibis (Geronticus eremita), which sports thinner feathers compared to Yurr's full plumage. She's still covered in lots of jewelry to flaunt her riches like a magpie but still has a disturbing taste for gutting her enemies in close combat.
I wasted waaay too much time on the shading, since both characters have a lot of black color, as well as me trying to bring out the rough texture of their bony faces, so I have no idea how many hours I wasted on it. Probably overdid it but I'm happy to finally have nice drawings of those two characters :D
Also please bring back the skirmishers in Infinite! I just love the T'vaoans way too much!

Or the few good ones we do get in universe (Sav Fel / Chol Von) we dont have any official artwork of so we just have to guess. And that is an unfortunate stereotype of the T'vaoan gals. Where as in lore we are given only a few tidbits like feather ruffs of some kind instead of a mane but thats hard to tell I'm pretty sure we can conclude they don't have boobs. Since they are an egg laying species and the females are supposed to be pretty large compared to the more common guys.
Don't underestimate the power of boner. People can slap titties or horse cocks onto anything, no matter if it makes sense or not. I've seen horrible stuff on just this page alone that makes me want to quit the Halo fandom xD
For the ruff of feathers on the female skirmishers I got inspired by the European bald ibis. Just a few thin long feathers compared to the male's more fancy mane with large display feathers. And I guess from what they have been described as in the lore, they seem to have a biology similar to modern day raptors with females being bigger and more aggressive, as well as corvid brains that just love all the shiny stuff. And they can kick/slash the shit out of your guts like a cassowary or secretary bird.

True that - and dang does that get draining after awhile seeing it all over x.x . At least there are a few islands in the sea of that to find solace and a rest. Like here :D
And thats an interesting take on the ruff. More upright than the males that fold back. And the females gota lay the eggs after all so they would need to be pretty sizable. Then again we have no idea how big Kig eggs are so that could be a moot point. And in regards to kickin stuff there was a scene in Kilo-Five, I forgot which book specifically, but Chol and one of her former soldiers meet up and go to one of Sav Fels clan to try and get information. Their target is a scrap metal dealer out of town and Chol's goon spots the merchant going for what he assumes is a weapon so he leaps upon the other and in one raking kick slices through a leather working apron the other was wearing. I believe afterwards as her soldier gets the merchant under control she thinks something along the lines of; 'What a dirty streetfighter mood, well done, if he hadn't had the apron on that would have disemboweled him'. Before going back to talking deals and information.
For my end when I heard feather ruff I thought of something more along the lines of;

Or if they were super high class/ranked;

Bringing back the old world fashion! And it also meant that unlike the males they could have helmets that fully protect their head rather than leaving the back of it only concealed by their pretty feathers. And gota get all the shinies to impress mates and show how powerful you are.

Glad to hear that! People like you make it worth to post my art here as well, despite feeling visually molested whenever I google for Halo fanart and my art not taking off like it does on other sites. Oh well, you need to dig through a lot of dirt if you want to find some gold nuggets. A lot of very crusty and disgusting dirt xD
The reason for female raptors being bigger than the males is in the first line since it's usually them who incubate the eggs, so more body mass can provide better constant heat for the eggs, whilst the males provide food. And secondarily since the females have that more mass than the males, they are more capable to fight, so they are the ones who are more aggressive and protect their territory whenever there's an intruder. I guess it's the same for the Kig-yar. As for the size of the eggs, I guess it'll be somewhere close to emus, since the chicks can leave the nest soon after hatching, according to Kilo-five, so they need to be big enough to produce far developed chicks.
That's also an interesting idea for a "ruff of feathers around their heads" =)

Ye. Ive always been a fan of the lore beyond the games as while they were fun I always asked myself 'but why' a lot. Which led me to enjoy the expanded universe a lot and in time writing my own characters in there. My two most used being a T'vaoan Champion female in service to the Covenant and a male T'vaoan independant supply captain. Former Slave and big coward compared to the normal 'rar eatcha face Kig'. So much fun. And seeing things staying true to the vision of the classic Halos is always so lovely to see.
I haddnt considered body heat for egg laying I just thought it was so the eggs could be formed and then plopped out! But that does make a lot of sense. And with your nest claimed you would need the mass to protect it. Learning every day and all that thanks for the explanation. And very true - I was sad we left Chols home so fast as her kig kids were rowdy and adorable D: Hope she managed to escape to get back to them.
And glad you think so! I thought it provided a real clear distinction between the males and females and gave extra options for fashion compared to sticking shinies in your mane as a male to show off. And it seemed much more regal and for lack of a better world powerful with a ruff rather than the 'Look at me!' males. Which also made sense cause well - gota get a mate so look at me! As I tended to assume that the males tend to outnumber the females by quite a lot since we see so few in lore. That could always just be a writing thing but it made sense as a reason for me. Which would make the fight for the gals pretty fierce.

More lore always makes me happy! Glad we got more of it in Infinite =)
The Infinite take on the feathers on the famelas makes sense too, since they seem to be more like the typical emu or dino-fuzz that's more for insulation, whilst the guys in Reach had true feathers that are more for display, so I guess those were more thought as as males.
