A young siamese cat girl is the magician behind this new technology, and has been held captive for some time. Upon realizing their true goals, she effects her escape and runs into a steampunk airship crew, though will they save her or abandon her, as she represents what may be the end of their way of life...

This is GREAT! I've only had time to get 1/2 way through this morning before work, but I'm loving this story!!
I do have one question for you though. When Topaz is discovered in the galley and tells them about working for Hallow and Liane and having run from them, why does Topher automatically assume that they will be chased? How can he figure Hallow and Liane will know where she ended up?
Anyhow, I'll finish when I get off tonight. This is my kind of story!! =3

Because he realizes she's their most valueable asset, and he knows how most companies in this city do business. Witnesses saw her sneak on board the ship (though the crew did not), and then they connected it to Topher. When she tells her story, you can tell she was not well treated, and Topher originally plans to leave her, but then the component falls out and changes everything, as he pauses and thinks.
So he just assumes that she was seen sneaking on board then? He can't know at this point that she was seen by witnesses who will allow Hallow and Liane to connect them to her.
I love what you're doing with Liane! She's much more deeply involved in the story than I had expected her to be. Reading this first thing this morning sure started my day off right!!!

Not quite, he knows that companies like General Electric will stop at nothing to find her. He might not know that, but he knows their reputation and can venture an educated guess. After all, he has two choices, to leave her behind or to take her with him. Since Sunstreak wouldn't let him ditch a cute siamese kitten, he's locked into taking her and whatever else that entails.
I particularly liked the flashback scene at the beginning, it wasn't originally planned that way, but it just seemed to fit, and it introduced Topaz very nicely. :)

Yes. You moved into the flashback very smoothly, and the timing works quite well to introduce Topaz and the genesis of her inventions. It also shows Lianes devious mindset right from the start.
Fun byplay between Topher and Sunstreak in the bar scene too! As well as his flirting with Julie on his way out. :)

Did I tell you I love it yet. Topaz is adorable and the whole thing reminds me of firefly in an awesome way. Its uniquely yours and carries all the qualities I love. Thank you for making me a happy fix it, I am indeed in love with good tools and kittens that don't mind getting dirty.
Thanks so much. ;) I'm glad you enjoyed it. :) Just so you know, your character will be mentioned in part 2 to lead up to the his main job in part 3. I may may start work on part 2 soon enough. I'm hoping that by the time I'm ready to release it I'll have heard from everyone. ;)
Not really, I think I have a pretty good idea as far as what I plan to do with your character. I think you'll like it. Be sure to read and comment on part 2 when it comes out. :) I'm working on part 2, but I may hold it until a few more of the cast reads the first part, don't want to rush folks.
Okay, I just finished reading this, and I'm afraid I have to say... I LOVED it!
When I started reading it I immediately found the plot to be a fun idea.
While I read I kept giggling and imagining all the scenes playing out in my head, though they were more like comical adaptations of the serious, though adventurous tone of the story.
You did a really really good job and I can't wait to read the rest of the series, and I promise I'll read Clockwork Soon! ^.^
Getting me to start reading is the problem... but when I get going I ignore everything that isn't in the book until I'm finished... ...I missed the bell on several classes at school because of that...

It seemed like such an epic premise, the twilight of the steampunk era to provide a good setting for a trilogy. :)
I tried to make Topaz as cute and as adorable as possible so the reader would so just want to hug her and keep her safe, I hope that came through. :) I love her naive innocence, it's so rare I get to play that part of me. :)

Topaz was absolutely adorable, I kept giggling at her reactions to things, though I was a bit curious about what might happen with the hyena and the pistol on the airship.

I don't think I've read any of your stories where the characters pull items out of nowhere that just happens to be the very thing they need that moment to save someone's life. It's either something that's expectantly common for the character, or something that would draw attention away from the story earlier on. ^^

I did my best to make her all cute and innocent like kittens are. ;) I may try to bring Shayzo back in part 3, though we shall see.
Yeah, I always consider 'hammerspace' or the mary poppins bag to be a sign of weak writing. If you have to stop and think 'where'd they get from', then that's a sign that the audience is not adequately prepared. I like the realistic kinds of stories where sometimes you literally survive just on what you've got in your pockets, and nowhere do you pull out a time traveling lollipop that lets you save the galaxy. :P

Shayzo was perfect for how I planned to use the old friend. I wanted a character that was a little older than Topher and would provide a different perspective than the other characters. I think I did all right for my first foray into Steampunk. He returns in part 3 for a pretty signficant role when you get around to reading parts 2 and 3. ;)
