A family crest/pact that he's been a part of since birth. If his body recognizes that it's in mortal peril, it will provide short-range teleportation, at the cost of a lot of his energy (enough to knock him out) and rendering it unusable for quite some time. (Since he ends up in peril a fair bit, it seemed only fitting when creating said character. :3)
