The theme for this day was Gem. As such, I decided to go with a TF into a custom species of mine, which I don't think I've publicly posted anything about yet: The feylight carbuncle. If people are interested, I can include them in more stories going forward. Some details about them not covered in the story:
- Their gems can be ground up and used in a powerful medicine, hence them being hunted for them (despite killing a feylight carbuncle being highly illegal in most societies). Since this story takes place in modern times, the feylight carbuncles actually have nothing to worry about, as modern medicine has rendered their gems obsolete. Still, millennia of being hunted by humans and demi-humans is not easily forgotten.
- The feylight carbuncle can use their gem as a light source, for forming a magical bond (see next point), and as a magical focus (akin to a wand or staff).
- A feylight can form a magical bond with a single willing being, at which point they can sense their rough location and broad physical condition, as well as emotional state if strong enough. This effect gets weaker or even stops working outright if the subject is far enough away. It is possible, but extremely rare, for this bond to be formed with a non-feylight. Breaking a magical bond is a difficult and unpleasant experience for the feylight. The death of the subject of the bond is highly unpleasant for the feylight, and does not break the bond.
- Feylight carbuncles lack reproductive organs. They create young via a difficult and lengthy ritual, which must be done between two feylights who have formed a magical bond with each-other. Doing so is rare, as feylight carbuncles do not age and are highly resistant to disease.
- The gem is a part of their skull, and its magic is necessary to keep them alive. For both of these reasons, removing/destroying the gem is always fatal to them.
In any case, enough rambling about that, time to ramble about the comparison between what I did and What CrizBN did. We both did gem as catalyst, but for me it was as a part of the new body. On a side-note, though, Spyro's home world does kinda fascinate me. Being a dragon there does sound kinda nice. Outside of, y'know... the plot. Being a statue does not sound so fun.
