I haven't had the chance to see any of Aggretsuko -- no Netflix, so no luck -- but avoiding everybody's favorite spotty-furred goober has been impossible. Gotta respect any property that gives hyenas some love, and Haida's somewhere in my top-5 for that species in fiction, probably #4 (and in case anyone's wondering, no, the hyenas from The Lion King aren't the first three).
I will say, though, that Anai's probably my spirit animal. Supremely neurotic and hyper-sensitive to criticism, both of which are fueled by severe anxiety, yet privately a skilled home cook who puts extra effort into presentation and practices the art of kyaraben and oekakiben? That's me in a nutshell, and I don't even work in an office.
'Yeti', I think is their pseudonym. They tend to create characters that reflect the current times and the feelings of the target audience, which helps the characters resonate with people -- Retsuko and everyone in her orbit are designed to be relatable, and it really does show.
Anai grew on me over time. At first I really hated him because he was everything I hated about entitled privileged Millennial college students that also don't put any effort into understanding the person that allegedly offended them. But as the episodes rolled on, the show did a great job of showing why he is the way he is, though it was a bit less subtle than Retsuko's earlier love interest the "space cadet."
I personally don't have much hope that Haida will ever get with Retsuko specifically (though at this point I've only watched through season 3). I have doubts about the writers of the show due to the latter half of season 3. But I hold out hope that Haida will eventually persevere in earning his own happiness. In fact, he has a better chance of getting there than Retsuko.... I think she is more likely to end up a lone professional woman like two of her managerial friends, will end up in an unhappy sham marriage... that is if the writers of the show keeps to Japanese cultural norms.
