Furmula E Champions! (+Story)
After many years of petrol and more recently hybrid powered cars in Furmula One, the FIA with the support of ABB formed a new all-electric spec racing series that Started in December 2020 and will conclude in May of 2021.
The first race was in Losail, Qatar, and was a poor showing for the Aston Marten ElectriCity UK Furmula E team, with former F1 world champion Kumori Urufu only placing 8th and his teammate, Scarlet Meowton finishing outside the points in 16th. It was instead a day for Hongkonger Jack Dawling of Cuzata E-Racing to take the inaugural win of the series with Mozilla Redwood and pole-sitter and fastest-lap-winner Ordagova Nevarol joining the bird on the podium. However the day after, they were back on the track on this back-to-back weekend which yielded a pole-position to the American fox; and a race later he turned it into a resounding win.
Kumori's win at the second Qatar ePrix propelled Aston Marten and Kumori Urufu to championship leaders, tied with Wellfleet eRacing and their driver Mozilla Redwood who scored two second-place finishes in the desert. Both teams and drivers, joined with FMWi Crawford and their driver of Barnabas Walstein were all within touching distance as the circus travelled to Morocco, Australia and Mexico (where Ordagova Nevarol became the only driver in the championship to score maximum points for his team by getting pole, fastest lap and the victory for his RCG Motorsport team!).
But it was only at Kumori's home race that he and the team would break away from the rest of the pack. Round 6 at the Circuit of the Americas in Texas was when he and former Italian F1 world champion Valentino Scorchio, driving for Welsh-based game DragonWings Motorsport, would duke it out for the top two steps on the podium; carrying it onto Monaco. Valentino may have lost out on a podium at the 2nd Monégasque race, but he made up for it at the Black Deer Ring in Austria with a podium when Kumori faltered.
In the last third of the season, it was back to trophy winning ways as Valentino took wins in France and Gemany's Hockenheimring with Kumori having to settle for third; the Guatemalan snake of Ordagova the only one splitting the two and joining them on the podium for the 6th and last time that season as they head fo the German Nurburgring the week after. Another race won by Kumori Urufu and points scoring by his teammate bought the two British Furmula E teams together heading into the final leg, but Kumori still lagging behind the Italian.
The last round would be in Canada on the Circuit Jean-Paul Faucheux in Montreal. A win by Kumori on the Saturday propelled him high in driver's championship and brought Aston Marten within 3 points of the DragonWings team. The heavens opened on the Sunday qualifying making the two remaining championship contenders fight through the pack to get points for themselves and their teams. The first lap resulted in seven retirements at turn 1 bring out the red flags. Once the debris was cleared and the rain slowed, the race was restarted. Lap 24 would seal the fate of the drivers’ championship, as former F1 world champion Valentino Scorchio misjudges the final chicane and crashes into the wall of champions resulting in the DNF. Kumori, now automatically the first ever Furmula E world champion, along with his teammate, needed to outscore the last remaining DragonWings Motorsport driver, Rufus MacIntyre, by at least 4 points. All the duo needed to do was keep on track and in the race in the positions they were in and they would bring home the constructor’s trophy too.
The end couldn't come soon enough atmosphere in the Aston Marten ElectriCity UK garage grew tense as the dry racing line grew wider with every lap and wheel stepped on the wet surface either side of it. But in the end, it was inevitable. To the tune of the Star-Spangled Banner and God Save the King, Kumori Urufu and his team boss, Owlfred Von Barnstable, rose their Fumula E driver’s and constructor’s championship trophies high in the sky as the first ever winners of the FIA ABB Furmula E championship!
