It's been a while since I made a personal painting like this. While painting it, I thought about when something becomes a thing to itself and when it just gets categorized with other more familiar things. In the same way, every person is an amalgamation of their experiences and preferences to themselves. But to others, all those parts are all separate concepts. To become someone specific all those concepts have to connect in other minds to form a new concept. It's true for my painting too; you probably don't see it all. Humans only see what they understand. Some will see it as a furry characters and not much past that. Others may see the artists who influenced me. And yet others may see choices I made in what to highlight in this painting. So who is this character? How much is there even to know about them?

a shugenja. maybe a priest, someone who talks to the spirits, hence the mask. so the spirits recognize them as one of their own kind. sometime during the path that led there, horns started to grow, but what irritates their fellow pelters seems to attract some special spirits... spirits with POWERS.
love all the details. some look like you added them after a while, but sometimes it's better to let things flow instead of trying to think them through.

the string with golden pearls going down from the mask's lace, and some of the collars' little ornaments. they look more like a subconcious made you add them than throroughly foreplanned. it's mostly the "bow" the string takes that makes me think it.
it is not meant as a critic, more an observation. I often add details on characters out of a whim rather than thinking them up to begin with. one facet leads to the next, like. :)

because then there are the most awesome results... many eurofurences ago I bought someone's pre-made fursuit mask shell of a feline (because it fitted my silly face), a pair of gazelle horns made of foam, and a set of teeth, without having more than a vague idea of what to do with it. it resulted in a gazelle-horned, impala-furred humanoid feline who is a former egyptian deity. he managed to avoid the forgetting and since then travels times, places, universes and everything else. for this he needs a blue stone... I sketched something vague for it. a couple months later, at a medieval faire, I found the exact fitting ornament on a necklace. a nice blue stone with white veins, and some extras, framed with silver... of course I couldn't resist.
but this is how characters are born. :)

I think it's to be expected that anything you experience influences you in some way. Every memory you have changes who you are to an extend. If someone truly experienced something, shared thoughts with another, and got out the other end the exact same person, then you should question if that someone even lived. xP
