Silas Rand grew up "primitive". Which is to say he was an anthro who grew up in the forest, and lived much (but not quite as much) as his feral ancestors.
When he decided he wanted to go to furry Underwood College, he thought nothing of spending a month or so walking there. After all, he only lived in central New York state, and Underwood was in southeastern Massachusetts.
Now, as for eating on the way there, judicious dumpster diving served him well. But so did his forest instincts. After all, how could a primitive possibly starve in his or her own kitchen?
Silas is on the far left in this pic. He ended up joining the basketball team there. ^^

Be one with the forest. Growing up with your feral cousins would be interesting if not exciting. I'll bet if he came across a wild feral wolf he wouldn't be scared. hehe Probably tame it and take it home as a pet.
"Hey Mom, look what followed me home."
"But Silas, he's twice your size."

He did play basketball before going. With his forest pals, etc. And he was very aware of Underwood's reputation. I'm sure those 2 facts are related.
As for ZipNut, I'm sure the name ZipNut is on the lips of even squirrels who aren't into sports. Kinda like Michael Jordan was known to peepz who never even touched a basketball.
As for Si, his game could actually compare favorably with guys like ZipNut. Except Si doesn't have the ego, and he's more introverted. As such, he's easily overshadowed personality-wise by some of his teammates.
