Maeterica
Maeterica is an ever present force that effects the ebe and flow off all things both spiritual and physical. It is an ever present cycle. There can be no life without Maeterica & There can be no Maeterica without life...
(It is, in essence, the Odellican version of The Force, but works somewhat differently. None of that stupid bacteria in your cells bullshit.) Those Odellicans with an above average level of Maeterica, and who learn to harness these forces within them are know as mages.
Mages
A Mage is an Odellican who through years of training learns to use his or her own natural maeterica to cast spells. The mages of Odellica differ from most in the respect that they cannot simply cast spells all willy nilly. Maeterica must be channeled through an object, most commonly a staff but it can be a weapon such as a sword or a bow.
Mages are commonly divided into three archetypes:
Battle Mage: A mage who uses spells for combat/defensive purposes
Physicial Mage: A mage who uses spells for healing and therapeutic purposes (Often referred to as a Physician or a Healer)
Mage of Illusion: A Mage who uses spells to distort one's perception of reality (These are the rarest type of mage)
Terms such as wizard, warlock, and witch are considered slang and show great disrespect to those who practice the maeteric arts.
Maeteric Implement
A mages tool for casting spells is know as an "Implement" and as stated before an implement can be a variety of things.
Spells
A spell can do just about anything (within a rubberized sense of reason.) It can be anything from throwing a fireball at someone to healing a wound
to making yourself appear invisible. SPELLS ARE NOT VERBALIZED IN ANY WAY; you must use the power of mental thinking to cast spells. (So no Kamehameha bitches!) The only thing a spell cannot do is create life. Only Maya can use maeterica to create life.
Maeteric Crystals
Maeterica can manifest itself physically in the form of Maeteric Crystals, and some mages use these crystals to enhance their powers. These crystals are useful in boosting a mages power, but exposure to maeteric crystals has, in rare cases, been know to cause Maeteric sickness; a debilitating condition that eventually results in the death of the afflicted individual. It manifests itself as blue vein-like growths, typically on the afflicted person's arms. There is currently no cure for maeteric sickness.
Enchanted Weapons
Enchanted weapons differ from Implements in the respect that it is the weapon, not the user that possesses the spell. Therefore an enchanted weapon can only cast the spell it is enchanted with. To create an enchanted weapon a Maeteric crystal is fused to the weapon andthe desired spell is then cast upon the weapon. Mages are the only people who can create enchanted weapons, but they are typically used, often in conjunction with more maeteric crystals, by those who are less maeterically gifted. The Pale Elf mages of Tan-Wei are widely known to be the best enchanters in the world. The Magna bow is a prime example of an enchanted weapon but just about anything can be enchanted a sword, an axe, or in Bensalem's case; a FAMAS assault rifle.
Bensalem's FAMAS
Bensalem's FAMAS is unique among enchanted weapons, not just because it's the ONLY firearm that exists in all of Odellica but because it CAN cast more then one spell. By way of destiny, or maybe because I fucking wrote it that way, the maeteric crystals used to enchant his FAMAS are placed on the magazines, and each is enchanted with a different element so by swapping between his three different mags, Bensalem's FAMAS can fire Earth, Fire, or Ice rounds. Bensalem must use maeteric crystals to fire the FAMAS since he is not from Odellica, and therefor possess no maeterica.
So to be clear the difference between and enchanted Weapon and an Implement:
Syrrys' Titanium War Axe is in implement, because he uses his own maeterica channeled through the weapon to cast spells.
Bensalem's FAMAS assault rifle in and enchanted weapon because the Spell(s) are artificially bonded to the weapon and the maeterica comes from an outside source.
Maeteric Value
All metals used in the construction of armor and weapons have an inherent Maeteric value that is, how well the material channels maeterica similar
to the way metals conduct heat and electricity. Weapons are usually crafted with materials that have a high maeteric value whilst shields and armor
usually have a low maeteric value. The higher the maeteric value of the material the lower the density, meaning the better it conducts maeterica
the more susceptible the metal is to breaking is and vice versa. Materials such as wood, leather, and stone do not posses any maeteric value.
Maeteric Ratio
The Maeteric Ratio is the ratio between Maeteric Value (MV) and Density (D) Both numbers, when added, MUST equal 100.
The following is a list of the 10 most common metals used in forging weapons and armor in order by their maeteric ratio.
Lowest MV
Black Steel: MV0 D100*
Osmium: MV26 D74
Tungsten: MV32 D68
Lead: MV46 D54
Silver: MV50 D50
Bronze: MV55 D45
Cobalt: MV62 D38
Steel: MV64 D36
Iron: MV66 D34
Titanium: MV72 D28
Highest MV
* Black steel's use in forging is very rare due to the complex nature of the metal. Its high density makes the metal quite heavy almost to the point where the weight superceds its strength, and the extreme temperature required to make the metal pliable also prevent it from being widey used.
