Carmine had been hired to protect this world, and he did do it for a while up until the point where they could no longer afford his services and went into debt. But, they had been loyal customers, so Carmine was willing to let them work off the debt. It might seem bad, but at least they are still somewhat under Carmine’s protection while they are working for him.
